Considering the series is most known for Mark Hamill's multi-episode portrayal of the Trickster, I now have a dead-easy way to jump from Star Trek to Star Wars in a game of six degrees.

today today is a good day so far today ♪
Jun. 10th, 2011 03:00 pmSo, we went to our FLCS today -- in its role as FLGS, since buying a newly arrived gamebook was the goal -- and I hit the 25¢ rack and scored a 4-issue run of Flash from the middle of Wally becoming a responsible human being. (i.e. Piper is working on him, but Linda is not yet on the scene.) There is Grodd! And Vixen! And Rex the Wonder Dog (I'm not kidding)! And Chunk! And Ralph Dibny!
I have yet to decide which delights me more: Ralph getting superspeed piggyback rides from Barry, or Piper getting them from Wally. Ralph so clearly enjoys them; he tends to yell "WOOOOO!" and extend his neck ahead. Piper has blousy polkdot shirts and always has to hang onto his hat. I think, ultimately, I'm just very amused that piggyback rides are a speedster thing. I mean, I don't know about Jay (his hat might pose problems) or the Quick clan, and Bart's been pretty scrawny compared to anyone he might carry for much of his existance, but even John Fox gave Piper piggyback rides. Maybe it's a redhaired friend thing? (Maybe I could score one!)
I also picked up an issue of the ST:TNG comic because it featuredMs. John Sheppard Sonya Gomez, who's growing on me more and more as I accumulate Starfleet Corps of Engineers books. She's got Ro Laren's hairdo and her skin is an alarming greyish colour, but I will rea dit anyway as it was only 25¢.
On the way home, there was a bake sale. :3 I bought cupcakes and cookies. :3
And window shopping at ThinkGeek.com today has me making grabby hands all through the What's New section. Some highlights:
I would be dangerously creative with this stuff.
Had this existed when I was a child, I might have missed hours of drawing She-Ra's costume on my friends in chalk, but I like it anyway!
Something for Brainiac 5 -- or from him? Hmm...
There was even a t-shirt that mentioned telnet! (But as it was a LotR thing, I'm not that interested.)
Time for tea and cupcakes~ :9

Aug. 18th, 2008 07:11 pmCouldn't find Gambit and the X-Ternals at my FLCS, but the owner says he'll check his yet-to-be-organized backstock for me. So I bought $30 of Defenders instead. X3 I jumped all around, I have the beginning and the near-end (before Manhunter, so, basically the end of Cloud). I'm kinda happy about this. *bounces* I'll let you know how it goes.
toys! yay toys! :D
May. 15th, 2008 05:58 pmI went to my FLCS again today, and I bought more toys.
And the most recent issues of Booster Gold and X-Factor, but this is a spoiler-free post.
ANYWAY. TOYS.
Shit, I meant to buy (good girl) Dr. Light. Ah, well, I got (Heroclix): old school Banshee, Destiny, Shaman, and really old school 70s disco star Dazzler, as well as Tempest and Crimson Fox (JLE represent!), and also (real figs): Mister Miracle (Kirby-style ftw) and Judas Contract Jericho and Deathstroke. My favourite Wilsons.
Also 4 d20s and 2 d6s. They're pretty. 8D
I need to find another place to display my Clix, though, because the top of my computer Tower is mighty crowded. Bases are overlapping. Sabretooth has got Wild Child by the head. It ain't pretty.

Titans Together!
May. 1st, 2008 03:41 pmYAY OMG! So I went to my FLCS and I bought HeroClix again.
Because he had all five of the original Teen Titans!
And Titans Hunt Joey!
And three of the Royal Flush gang!
That's right, I bought home Speedy, Aqualad, Wonder Girl, Robin and Kid Flash, Ten, Jack and Ace (Jack and Ten are one fig, riding a giant card), and (secretly evil clone) Jericho! I now have enough folks to make dioramas!
But I don't have space. ;~;
(I have also watched clips from every single episode of X-Men: Evolution. And I got called in to work on my day off again. ...These two things are unrelated.)

For the rest of you, your homework is to bone up on how often Hal Jordan hits his head, is clocked in the head, or has psychic attacks on his brains (which are probably mush by now, eh?)
eta: If you click on my location, you can see that laundry is actually bigger than the United States. You can also see Rictor's supposed hometown, Guadalajara! :D

CLUTCH, the movie
Mar. 18th, 2008 06:44 pmChances are, you've never heard of CLUTCH. It's a fairly obscure Canadian film made in 1998. Sure, it won a couple of awards. You've still probably never heard of it.
Unless, like me, you know that the first name showing in the opening credits was "DAVID HEWLETT".
And that's probably why you watched it.
(Some people who comment on IMDb.com apparently watched it because ExpressVu was promoting how Tom Green was in it, and were tipped into blackest angst when he was in, like, a minute of screentime. As an unnamed character. Which I thought was great, because I can't stand him.)
But there was a wonderful surprise for me, because you see, there are basically 4 protagonists, in two pairs, one of whom are together throughout the film, and one of whom actually seem to become a couple. David Hewlett is in one of these, and GORDON MICHAEL WOOLVETT is in the other.
:D :D :D :D
And they're roommates. (DH and GMW.)
( Spoilers about plot and further casting commentary under here ) Oh!
Filmmakers seem to have a contractual obligation to make David Hewlett, in whatever he's in, be:
a. wet
b. naked
c. wet and naked
d. bloody
This is an "a" and "d". He's wearing a suit and long coat throughout, even when riding a tiny bicycle up a hill. But he washes his face because he is, of course, bleeding, and we see this from below. It's a neat angle.
His uncanny ability to down an entire glass of something without stopping to breathe or gagging was, alas, not employed in this film.

And I really don't think a woman who collects rooster-themed decorating elements can throw stones.
Anyway.
Check it out! Hasbro is offering a "blank" My Little Pony for customizing (although I kinda wonder about the hair. I mean, when I've customized JEM dolls, I had to root new, pre-coloured hair. And it's harder to dye hair that's already rooted. Maybe it's a special texture?) and Mattel is putting out some new Barbies, such as DC's Black Canary andSupertorso Supergirl (much as I haven't enjoyed this latest version of Kara, I love this doll's hair), as well as Sandy, Rizzo, and Frenchy, for the Grease fans I know are in the audience.
AWESOME. :3

But is the Joy of Discovery only to be found in Bubbling Beakers and Brass-piped Engines? Nay! Of course not! More Modern robotics are just as Delightfully Creative and prone to Experimentation as any imagine Era of Gentlemanly Industry!
let me share some cool links with you
Oct. 23rd, 2007 12:40 amSo, I've been reading articles at Suicide Girls (which is an outgrowth of my earlier activity today: reading online resources for Sons of Ether) and saw this awesome and totally true quote from Wil Wheaton:
"Hollywood faces its greatest challenge in the history of adapting comic books to movies with Watchmen. Many executives won’t understand what it’s about. Neither will their young, allegedly hip assistants they hired out of Harvard Business School.
If Hollywood really wants to do this right, and really doesn’t want to fuck it up, my advice is to listen to the focus group at Comic-Con. I mean, really listen, because if Hollywood fucks up Watchmen, there’s going to be a nerd riot so terrifying, it will be like a thousand studio executives cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."
It's from this excellent article.
Another cool article by Wil is this discussion of communication and it's ramifications on... a lot of things. I also had fun reading this, this, and this. (Diamonds and tectonic plates, holes in the universe, and an interesting theory about people in the future and us that I don't quite understand at the moment. It's late. I'm kinda tired.)
And here you probably thought SuicideGirls.com was nothin' but sexy girls. It also has science and geekery! :D
And while geeks appreciate pictures of girls on the net, girls appreciate pictures of geeks on desks, on the net. Or a table, in Steve's case, there. ;3

SGA fic: He Who Has Spoken
Sep. 6th, 2007 01:39 amOriginally posted for the men and machines challenge on
sga_flashfic. Now that the challenge is over, I can mirror it here.
Title: He Who Has Spoken
Author: Eliyes
Rating: G
Primary Characters: John Sheppard and Rodney McKay.
Summary: Sheppard and McKay discuss cyborgs fictional and hypothetical.
Author's Notes: There may be some spoilers for movies and series that have been out for several years, and there are a lot of SF references. I double-checked to make sure everything is something you can at least find out a little about on Wikipedia, rather than put a list of everything in here and possibly spoil the fic.

Okay, I haven't read the whole book (though I've read more than half), but I've flipped through all of it. In fact, after a while, I frantically searched through it for the warning that says: This is not happy fun Changeling. This game is about abuse, slavery, and more abuse. Don't read this book if such things might trigger memories of experiences you'd rather forget. Don't play this game unless you have discussed said triggers with the storyteller and the other players and you trust them to respect your boundaries.
I didn't find it.
I find that a bit irresponsible. There's lots of interesting story potential in how we get beyond the unfortunate parts of our past, or how we don't; of how tragedy alters our lives so much we hardly recognize ourselves or the world around us. I just think that when a game gives storytellers license to rape and torture the PCs, it's a bad idea not to also give them some tools to deal with potentially traumatic subjects in a way that keeps everyone at the table safe.
Me again. I should point out that a previous White Wolf game, Kindred of the East, did have such a warning. Why they neglected to put one in C:tL I can't imagine, given that rape and terrible abuses are freely mentioned in the character background examples.

Aug. 24th, 2007 02:04 pmI remember the first time I heard someone mention "Cliff Notes" on an American television programme. (I believe it was the episode of The Cosby Show where Theo is attempting to learn MacBeth.) I turned to my mother and asked of her,
"Mom, what's 'Cliff Notes'?"
And lo! she spake unto me thusly:
"It's the American version of Coles Notes, honey."
And I was appeased.

I only bought one DC figure today -- the rest were Marvel. Yes, my ratio is no longer DC/25:Marvel/2. Shocking!
From DC, I picked up Wildcat, one of the Cool Old Dude Brigade members. :3 I wuvs him.
For Marvel, I already had Wild Child, so I got him Diamond Lil and Aurora to keep him company (they also had a Snowbird, but she was a very expensive limited edition, and Shaman, but it was whoa, f'ugly, so I didn't get them). My Alpha Flight pack thus increased, I moved onto New Mutants, picking up Cannonball (in the purple-and-goggles costume), and Magma. But the one that caught my attention in the first place and started this most recent mini-binge was Gargoyle. Oh, Isaac. You and Koriand'r have, like, the same taste in clothes. You are my New Defenders secret crush (as opposed to my obvious New Defenders crushes: Beast, Iceman, Angel, Candy Southern and Cloud).

Now, I am going to reapply sunscreen and go to
sinfonica's house to watch SGA and eat ice cream. :D

Angelica: *little laugh* I'd love to see a flick, Bobby!

Peter: Sure is! That's why we're going to the Bijou together.
Bobby: The Bijou? Nah, I've seen that flick at the Bijou. Let's go to the Rialto.
Angelica & Peter: *glance at each other, and then at Bobby, incredulously*
Angelica: Bobby, I've got a date with Peter tonight!
Bobby: Hey, that's okay, I don't mind. I just don't wanna see the same flick over again. Let's go to the Rialto.
Peter: Why don't you get your own date and go to the Rialto?
Bobby: Now that's a great idea! Who should I call?

Jul. 20th, 2007 12:20 pmOkay, so, David Hewlett has a twitter thing and he updates it to make it easier for his fans to stalk him. (Yes, deliberately. He stalks back; I feel it's fair.) This is a great way to find out little tidbits about his movie, A Dog's Breakfast, working on Stargate: Atlantis, what's up with his fiancée, what the weather's like in Vancouver, who might be at what convention, and also he tells people when he's exercising and dieting, which I understand is helping some of his fans stick to their dieting/exercising thing of choice. Right on.
He also talks about his co-workers. Screencap:

That is just adorable on so many levels.

Jul. 10th, 2007 10:40 pmAttention X-Men fans, former X-Men fans, and people who don't consider themselves fans per se but are reasonably familiar with the stories: watch X-Men: Phoenix Season, a satirical little flash animation that I, for one, really like. Their doorbell is awesome, and all the gestures are done very well even though only The Blob has arms. Or a mouth.
And for the Star Trek fans in the audience, there's an extremely well-edited fake trailer for STAR TREK XI: THE WRATH OF KIRK here. But if the idea of the original crew waging war against the ST:TNG crew upsets you, perhaps give it a miss.
More geekery as it happens!
