[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: okay, so, I basically downloaded the soundtrack for The Chipmunk Adventure because I wanted the song Gettin' Lucky
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: I don't know if it's a cover or what
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: but now
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: I am picturing various non-chipmunk fictional people singing it
[livejournal.com profile] kiffie: *cackling*
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: and possibly dancing with cartoon snakes the same way
[livejournal.com profile] kiffie: XD
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: I AM PICTURING SHARON AND STEVE STANDING IN A ROOM FULL OF DEFEATED HYDRA AGENTS SINGING IT BACK AND FORTH
[livejournal.com profile] kiffie: See, my childhood association with the Chipmunks was Bat-Munk, so... uh... that's having an interesting time in my mind, at the moment.
[livejournal.com profile] kiffie: Oh, come now... Serpent Society, surely. Timelines be damned.
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: OH HONEY HONEY GIVE ME *punch* A CLUE *kick, elbow* WONTCHA TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO *flying tackle*
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: sure, serpent society also works

[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: bong hahaha
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: it's hard to be taken seriously as a supervillain when Captain America has done a pseudo Elvis impression while singing into your tail
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: if you don't have any clue what I mean I can find a video on youtube for you
[livejournal.com profile] kiffie: ...I am picturing this.
[livejournal.com profile] kiffie: This is making my head hurt.
[livejournal.com profile] eliyes: can you imagine? in the costume, swivelling his hips and knees, flinging an arm into the air with his head down to the mic/tail -- and catches the shield XD

With 29 days to go, the kickstarter is already past the minimum funds goal. People really really want a graphic novel based on a handful of Jonathan Coulton songs, as it turns out!

After all, it has monkeys, zombies, and robots!

If you'd like some context for that post I made with all the pictures of Captain America in corsets, now you can have some! GayLeague has posted the relevant pages, as well as given some info on where to look for reprints and also some context for the story itself.

For example, it's a rare example of an American superhero fighting Nazis printed before the USA got involved in the war -- the issue came out April of 1941, more than half a year before Pearl Harbor was bombed. (Remember, the Mayor of New York wound up giving the guys working on the Cap comic a police protection detail because they were being sent hate mail and death threats, menacing people were loitering by their building, and people were following them around -- all because they were angry at the anti-Nazi message in the Captain America comics.)

Can I just say how amazed I am that Steve and Bucky travelled from the States to Portugal by air, then by train from there through France to Germany, then to England (I presume a boat or another plane was involved at some point there) -- all in these disguises?! That's a pretty extensive undercover gig as a old bag in a corset, Steve!

Title: Roger Aubrey and the Gingerbread Menace
Timing: Present
Summary: Expanding on the gingerbread men thing previously mentioned in Yule: Preparation Is Key.
A/N: Please note that "expanding on" is not the same thing as "explaining". ;3

Roger Aubrey's Christmas tree decorations had a clear theme: gingerbread men. )

This fic was written Christmas Eve, 2012. :D

Be merry!

Check out the highly memorable (well, maybe not to the drunk superheroes) Alpha Flight Christmas Issue!! (They have probably had other Christmas things happen since the 90s. I don't care, they will never be as good as that one. Which is sad.)
(P.S. Warning -- male strippers and 90s art.)

And then admire these awesome Northstar & Aurora stockings!

If Alpha Flight isn't your cup of cheer this Christmas (or even if it is!), then let Annie Lennox bring you glad tidings of comfort and joy )

Happy 24th, all.
eliyes: (I have a point)
I have no problem with Northstar marrying his boyfriend; they're a cute couple, and comics need to stop trying to keep everyone in this relationship limbo thing.

What I want to know is why the hell are they getting married in New York?! They're both Canadian citizens! Same-sex marriage has been legal in Canada since 2005! Why not get married there, avoiding the red tape of having your wedding in another country -- always a pain in the ass. They can have a post-wedding party in New York if for some reason a bunch of the guests couldn't go to Canada -- have the X-Men moved back to NY, even? I thought they were still based off the West Coast?

Went to my FLCS and gave the guys a card and box of After Eights, to their delight! Also bought a heroclix figure of Booster Gold and Blue Beetle (and posted pictures of it here on [livejournal.com profile] boostle, if you'd like to see) as well as the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine mini-series where the campy evil Gul Dulcet kidnaps Bashir in order to lure Garak into a trap. Or something like that; I haven't read them yet. I'm very excited, though, and as they were only 50¢/issue, I feel it was money well-spent!

It's been a good day so far. :3 ...Now I'm going back to bed. X3

Sequence of Events

1. Batgirl, Stephanie Brown, is given the task of infiltrating an English boarding school (Batman: The Return)
2. Batgirl, Stephanie Brown, arrives in England ready for that mission (Batgirl #22)
3. Stephanie Brown, who was never ever Batgirl, performs that mission (Batman INC: Leviathan Strikes!)
4. Batgirl, Stephanie Brown, returns to Gotham following that mission (Batgirl #23)

credit: teatimebrutality

But supposedly -- and everyone over at DC keeps saying this -- Leviathan Strikes! is meant to take place before the reboot, for reading purposes. (It was meant to be published then.) So, really, what the hell?

eta: PARADOX RESOLVED! Despite the fact that previews of the pencils clearly showed Steph as Spoiler, the final art had her as Batgirl. And for soem reason Madonna, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Lily Perry are the villains. I wish I was kidding, but I'm not.

Got the Captain America one-shot about the original Agent 13 and hated it. Peggy is awesome, but the people who put this together decided that instead of her just being flat out awesome like she was, they had to make Cap into an asshole and her all mad at him in order to build her up. This pissed me off because Cap's not an asshole -- he is especially not an uncontrollably violent and hormonal, unmindful jerk like in this book -- and also Peggy does not need building up, she was already totally awesome on her own!

Fans of Cap and Mademoiselle 13, I don't recommend this book.

Uh...

Quoting from this interview with Dan Didio:

In addition to Batwoman, Apollo and Midnighter, you’re also introducing a female bisexual African American superhero in Voodoo. Was it a conscious decision to introduce characters from across the LGBT spectrum?

Yes. What we really wanted to do was show the diversity of our audience across the line of our books. Right now we have such a wide fan base and we wanted to create characters and stories that really reflected [that] fan base.

...

Gay League has posed the question of whether Voodoo was previously bisexual, but I'm asking whether they mean Priss at all. Because screw who she screws, since when is she African-American? That and the use of the word "introducing" makes me hope they're introducing a new character as part of Voodoo's support cast.

Hm.

*puts down a stack of Young Justice issues covering the team's visit to Myrg, subsequent baseball game against alien invaders, and side trip to New Genesis*

I have to admit, Inertia is a better actor than Match. Sure, Match was hampered by a) the fact that he was supposed to sew strife and bad decisions in the team, and b) the Point Men, who nearly blew his cover a couple times.

Thad's aberrent behaviour is easier to spot in the Impulse books, because his major flaw in portraying his progenitor is that the contempt he feels for Bart (and pretty much everyone else) sometimes shines through. That's actually harder to spot in Young Justice, because the writers held everyone on that team in contempt except Cissie (who was technically not on the team at the time), or wrote like they did.

Most people have seen K. Beaton's ooh Mister Darcy ooh strip, and/or one or more of the many many parody/homages of it.

This is my favourite so far.

(Not least becuse I have always loved Lady Liberty and Blind Justice as a couple. The only person Lady Liberty goes with better than Blind Justice is, in my opinion, me. I'd totally wear a blindfold for her! And I'm a Libra, so the scales are no problem! Oh, Lady Liberty. *dreamy sigh*)

So, we went to our FLCS today -- in its role as FLGS, since buying a newly arrived gamebook was the goal -- and I hit the 25¢ rack and scored a 4-issue run of Flash from the middle of Wally becoming a responsible human being. (i.e. Piper is working on him, but Linda is not yet on the scene.) There is Grodd! And Vixen! And Rex the Wonder Dog (I'm not kidding)! And Chunk! And Ralph Dibny!

I have yet to decide which delights me more: Ralph getting superspeed piggyback rides from Barry, or Piper getting them from Wally. Ralph so clearly enjoys them; he tends to yell "WOOOOO!" and extend his neck ahead. Piper has blousy polkdot shirts and always has to hang onto his hat. I think, ultimately, I'm just very amused that piggyback rides are a speedster thing. I mean, I don't know about Jay (his hat might pose problems) or the Quick clan, and Bart's been pretty scrawny compared to anyone he might carry for much of his existance, but even John Fox gave Piper piggyback rides. Maybe it's a redhaired friend thing? (Maybe I could score one!)

I also picked up an issue of the ST:TNG comic because it featured Ms. John Sheppard Sonya Gomez, who's growing on me more and more as I accumulate Starfleet Corps of Engineers books. She's got Ro Laren's hairdo and her skin is an alarming greyish colour, but I will rea dit anyway as it was only 25¢.

On the way home, there was a bake sale. :3 I bought cupcakes and cookies. :3

And window shopping at ThinkGeek.com today has me making grabby hands all through the What's New section. Some highlights:
I would be dangerously creative with this stuff.
Had this existed when I was a child, I might have missed hours of drawing She-Ra's costume on my friends in chalk, but I like it anyway!
Something for Brainiac 5 -- or from him? Hmm...
There was even a t-shirt that mentioned telnet! (But as it was a LotR thing, I'm not that interested.)

Time for tea and cupcakes~ :9

Having just finished reading 1751 pages of the webcomic Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comiczomg, I am now going to read another (ongoing) webcomic by the same artist while I wait for a new update of YAFGC. And try to acclimate myself to not having hundreds of pages to go.

The "other webcomic" in question involves the 6th Doctor taking in a Jem & the Holograms concert, because he wants to know how they got their hands on Synergy, whose level of holographic tech should not be available at that time in Earth's history. I peeked at the latest strip; it involved Techrat and explosions.

This interests me strangely.

If you are also strange and/or interested, the beginning of the story arc "Outrage [of the Zygons]" is here.

As for YAFGC, if you've read it, I'd be happy to yak about it with you in the comments! I can say this much without putting spoilers in the main post: I really disliked Lucas at first (you're pretty much supposed to) and now he's one of my favourite characters. That character development was skillful; I am officially impressed!

Sooo... I picked up Essential Marvel Captain America volume 3 (vol. 2 is all sold out) aaaand...

Cap and Falcon are really in a relationship, huh?

I mean, when Doom's Bucky-bot is revealed as "Bucky Barnes back from the dead!" on TV (and just... don't even get me started on Baron von Strucker trolling the gyms of San Francisco looking for the perfect young man with which to lure in Captain America, seriously), Falcon's watching at home and gets all emo because he'd really been hoping he and Cap could be partners... they'd seemed to really hit it off 'n all... And then when Falcon gets a girlfriend, Cap's all like "if he's with her then he can't be with me! *choke sob*" and I just stare at the page.

Also, I would like to know what Cap's tone of voice was when he told Fury he wanted him to meet someone, since it caused Fury to throw an arm around Cap's shoulders and say, "You know my type, pal -- cute 'n' cuddly, with big blue eyes." (*cough* You mean like, oh, Steve Rogers, Nick?) To which Cap replied by describing Falcon's "bulging biceps".

Regardless, it's interesting to see Falcon in these early stories, and to see the two of them dealing with having an interracial partnership. Falcon gets a lot of flak from his community for working with a white dude -- especially one as iconic as Captain America. He really feels a need to prove himself, and his frustration with Cap's seeming innocence about modern race relations is both clear and understandable. But they try to work through it. (And really, compared to the America Steve Rogers grew up in, I wonder how much progress things seemed to have had, to his eyes?)

P.S. Cap's boycrush on Clark Gable is adorable.

Let's play "Name That Team-Up!" DC baddie version.

These two criminals are both part of the so-called "Rogues Gallery" of one particular member of the Justice League. While not constant partners, they have worked together occasionally and are known to be friends.

The first is a redhead who habitually wears green costumes, and whose M.O. heavily involves a form of hypnotism. Activities are usually arguably a form of activism, or theft to fund it. Strongly indicated as a homosexual.

The second is fair-haired, favours close-fitting but clownish apparel, and relies on a miscellany of weapons customized from what might otherwise be found in a joke shop or slapstick comedy's prop room. A cream pie could be a bomb -- or not.

[Poll #1417857]

Tough choice, eh?
eliyes: (arg Elizabeth)
Saw an issue of The New Mutants #1 (the new one, obviously) at the FLCS today. Picked it up and after four pages put it down again with a firm decision that Marvel can go fuck itself. Sam and Roberto were bullying the students.

SAM AND ROBERTO. BULLYING.

I THINK FUCKING NOT.

Roberto can be an ass sometimes, but he has major issues with bullying, and Sam -- is Sam. Come on now, people! Cheese and crust, what an appalling mass of OOC writing. *angry facepalm*

Precipitated by this unpleasantness, therefore, walking home saw Tai and myself talking about a happier version of the DCU we started poking at a handful of years ago, and really developed after Graduation Day ticked us off. Anyway, we decided that Spoiler in that 'verse is alive and is the guardian of Blüdhaven.

I feel good about that decision.
eliyes: (Daffy stressed)
UncannyXmen.Net did a spotlight on Chris Bradley!

"Who?" you may ask, and I wouldn't be surprised. He was a kid with lightning powers who the X-Men took in only to discover that he had the Legacy Virus. That all happened in X-Men Unlimited #8. What even most people who read that book don't know is that his story didn't end there! Alas, it did end, and quite tragically. Read all about it!
eliyes: (Raoul girl)
These issues come after Inferno, when the New Mutants and the X-Terminators met, and tell of how the two teams combined -- although Skids and Rusty are separated by the end of these, really, so it's more like the Muties assimilated Boom-Boom and Rictor. One of the things I liked, reading these, is that I know exactly where it fits in with the rest of the X-books, timeline-wise. Marvel really sucks at that these days.

#76 was a really fun adventure story: Namor and the kiddies fight a giant tentacled thing! )
Issues #77 and 78 are the beginning of another Asgard arc. After the kiddies take Illyana home to her family, Dani collapses. Ship analyzes her illness and concludes it to be magical in nature, so sends them to see Doctor Strange. Alas, the good Sorcerer is pretending to be dead at this time -- and has an eyepatch! -- but he watches them invisibly. It seems Dani is possessed by an evil entity, whose toxic aura is affecting the others. He observes that Boom-Boom and Rictor (or rather, "the little blonde and the dark-haired boy") are the most sensitive to it, which is kind of a no-brainer, what with the way they get into a shouting match on his doorstep and have to be physically restrained from attacking each other.

This is the bit that really caught my attention, actually. Why those two? Other than Rahne, they're the youngest -- and Rahne, being psychically connected to Dani, should have been more easily affected, right? Dani's almost a stranger to them, so what's the deal? Are they just naturally mystically sensitive? I'd really like someone to run with that for a fic, maybe an AU. There's a canonical other reality where Rahne is a queen and Boom-Boom is her loyal maidservant. There's no Rictor ever seen there -- maybe he's off being a wizard's apprentice! *plots*
