Hey, look, I went INSANE and actually made a list of all the fic I've posted. *facepalm* This is staying right at the top of my journal for the REST OF MY LIFE so that I can keep it updated. Hopefully it will prove useful.
I am including commentfic, and drabbles I posted in a glot, as their own separate entries. BECAUSE IT'S MY LIST. B}

So, recently a discord I have the pleasure of being a member of had a little event wherein everyone who wished to participate submitted two songs containing no English and a list of languages they understand, and received two songs containing no languages they know, which they were to listen to one or both of and in a 30 minute period produce something of their choice.

I used only one of my received songs as inspiration: Aldan reyð by the Faroese band ORKA, which can be heard on the tube of you here: https://youtu.be/Y25l39m6IX8 (I also didn't watch the video.) I wrote some original fiction, which I did not finish in the allotted time. Literally stopped mid sentence.

You can read it under the cut )

And some Author's notes under this cut )

So I am doing the Highlander Holiday Shortcuts Fic Exchange again this year ( https://hlh-shortcuts.dreamwidth.org/ ) and I'm pretty stoked because I like the idea I came up with and I'm having fun writing it.

Except I can't come up with a decent title. (_ )_

This is a frequent problem of mine. Also, as it's a secret santa type thing where the authors are revealed after everyone has a chance to guess who wrote what, I can't just, frex, post a summary on here and ask for suggestions.

So my apologies, Recipient, if you are reading this after you get it and the title is kinda blah. I tried.

Recently I've been doing spring cleaning, furniture re-arranging, and junk culling. This has lead to me finding a lot of my notebooks, and I've found fics I've already posted here, and fics I never finished, original sci-fi settings, doodles, D&D character sheets and campaign notes, journal entries of the not-to-be-shared variety, outlines for various stories and AUs...

The two things that stand out to me are,

A) I have an actual in-progress novella set in the Stargate SG-1 s10e13 "The Road Not Taken" universe, post-episode. And it's actually pretty good! I wish I could remember where I was going with it, exactly, so I could pick it back up, but even the outline I found only went so far. (Also, I have a note and it's relevant in what's written that McKay has asthma instead of hypoglycemia, and I wonder why. Is that in the show...? I'll have to rewatch the episode...)

and

B) Several pages of a Young Hercules fanfic. I, uh... what?

Okay, so I've not made it a secret I was into the whole Hercules: The Legendary Journeys/Xena: Warrior Princess/Young Hercules series setting thing. I'm pretty sure I posted links to my fave Widow Twanky fanvid, and that filk about Callisto. I used to use an icon of Iolaus from Young Hercules on this very journal! But I don't think I've written any fanfic in that universe other than... this.

It's Our Heroic Foursome running into Anticlea, who's about their age in the story, and... *scratches head* Mythologically speaking, she's the daughter of Autolycus and the mother of Odysseus, both of whom are Herc's contemporaries in the show 'verse. (Granted, so is Iolaus. He's supposed to be his nephew, princely son of King Iphicles.) I wish I knew where I was going with this story, too! But less because I want to finish it and more because I'm confused. XD

claravoyant posted the following exercise (and then deleted or moved their blog, so I can't link the original post):

1. of the fic you’ve written, which are you most proud of?
2. favorite tense (past/present/future)
3. favorite POV (first/second/third/etc)
4. what are some themes you love writing about?
5. what inspires you to write?
6. thoughts on critique
7. create a character on the spot…. NOW!
8. is there a character you love writing for the most? the least? why?
9. a passage from a WIP
10. what are your strengths wrt writing?
11. what are your weaknesses wrt writing?
12. what’s your favorite place for writing resources?
13. who are your favorite writers?

I think the original gist was that people were supposed to give the poster a number and they'd answer (it was on tumblr, that seems to be a thing), but I am not going to do that. I'm just going to repost these here because I think all my writerly friends might get some benefit from thinking about what their answers are to some of these. I may post some answers in a future edit.

If ever you are composing fiction -- or non-fiction! -- for the consumption of others, and you use a word you suspect may not be quite right... but spellcheck says it's a word... look it up in a dictionary. Hell, this is the computer age -- stick in in a search engine and see what pops up. Just in case you don't know what it means. Even if you think it's probably what you mean.

Getting people you know to have solid and extensive vocabularies to proofread for you is also a good idea.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to compose an email to an author who seems like a nice gal and writes really good stories, but has a couple of words used entirely incorrectly throughout the 50+ of her stories I've read so far. I think I'll start with the obvious Princess Bride quote...

Okay, so last September there was Gay As In Happy: A Queer Characters Comment Fic-A-Thon (I posted a link to it then), and people posted many prompts! Like this Mystique/Destiny one! But very few got answered. I mean, there are 3 pages of comments, and only 4 prompts were answered (I counted). None of mine were answered, and so, I am reposting them here. Perhaps someday I will write something for them myself.

(But if you'd like to give it a try, go right ahead.)

1.
Flashpoint DCU, Hartley & Wally, Hartley comes out

(I imagine Hart came out to Wally much sooner and differently than in the pre-Flashpoint/reboot DCU, since they grew up together.)

2.
Captain America comicsverse, Arnie/Michael, love is my anti-drug.

3.
Invaders/WWII Marvel-verse, Brian Falsworth(/Roger Aubrey) & Jackie Falsworth, I love to see you happy.

And that's it! *jazz hands*

Title: Some Things Are Inevitable
Fandom: Hahahahaha... This is set in a multiversal nexusy place where people from many different series, mythologies, and original weird places congregate. The important ones for right now are Weiss Kreuz and Sailor Moon, so long as you understand that a hell of a lot of development of these characters has been done through roleplay etc. since the point at which they more-or-less left their native narratives...
Props: [livejournal.com profile] taichara and I agreed that this was completely inevitable, tossed around the possible scenario, and then I wrote words. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] krillia, for helping me work out some phrasing that satisfied my need to feel like all dialogue here is translated from the language actually being spoken, i.e. Japanese.
Warnings: Uterus. Uterus uterus uterus. LULZ (Also, boozahol.)
Disclaimer: No kitties were harmed by uterine attacks (from spaaaaace) in the making of this fic.
Author's Note: Sorry, Tai, I couldn't fit the word "uterus" into the title. :( Hope you enjoy it anyway.

Some things really are inevitable... )

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] taichara at surely, a perfect definition of Mary Sue.
Over on the Exalted forums some months ago (I missed this only because I deliberately skipped this thread due to the title, oops), Dex Davican posted what I, personally, think is the point-perfect definition of a Mary Sue or Gary Stu, or whatever.

To whit, a "Mary Sue":

A character who redefines an otherwise-coherent setting around them through sheer narrative weight, rather than through personal qualities. There are many traits that Mary Sues tend to exhibit (mostly to make them seem "distinctive" or "unique"), but ultimately none of those traits adequately explain the effects that the character has on the setting or the people within it.

Common (but not required) signs of a Sue:
-Other characters like or grow obsessed with the character, without real evidence of what is likeable or obsession-worthy about them.
-The character believes his/herself to be an outsider, but isn't really treated as such.
-Morally-questionable actions become acceptable when the character performs them, and may or may not remain so ever after. Conversely, people who oppose the character steadily become more monstrous.
-If in a pre-existing setting, the character is not only the protagonist of the current story, but begins to take over the stories of pre-existing protagonists, sometimes warping those prior protagonists into a form more acceptable for the new shape of the story. In some cases, the character changes the very rules of the setting.
-The character is talented at anything and everything, often with a notable exception that is important to the character and negligible in its impact on the story, except to emphasize the character's belief that they are an outsider.

This is, frankly, brilliant in its succinctness. Bravo, Dex.

Originally lifted from [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory. (2009, 2010.) This year I've removed a question, and will continue to do so in future, since my answer hasn't changed from 2009.

Fanfic writing procedes apace. I've got two done and a third started.

Worryingly, I've written angst, then fluff, and now angst again.

...Then again, that's pretty true to the source material.

So I settled myself down to write a quartet of vignettes sort of showing the bondgroup accumulating people, in a first impression kind of way. I figured a page, page-and-a-half per section. Nothing huge.

SEVEN PAGES LATER, I am still on the first section. Apparently it doesn't want to be a vignette. It may, in fact, want to be a novella. ARGH.

Also, the first officer (as yet still unnamed, although my feeling is that it's a male human) is getting somewhat... prickly. Jealous. Antagonistic. He resents how the second officer, i.e. Glenn, became so chummy with the Captain after the new CMO (and her harem bondgroup) came on board, having been long time friends of Glenn's and swiftly becoming fast friends with the Captain. (Glenn and Shallan met at the academy! and remained close friends ever since, no matter where they were posted; he likes all her spouses, and they all like him.) I can kinda see his point, I guess, but I don't know what to do with him, except possibly have An Incident and then transfer him to a different ship.

Gnaarrrrgh, andorians! *tears at hair*

! And yes, there are stories I could tell about that/then.
eliyes: (facepalm)
*despairingly tries to hide from the Disney movie Sleeping Beauty* As much as I appreciate the plotbunny, this is something I'd much rather read than write. For one thing, I do not know nearly enough about horses!

This was me at around 3:30am this morning:

Hm. This scene as written isn't really working for me. Maybe if I try it from the pov of one of the other characters. Let's try, hmm... [A]'s roommate, [B]!

*write write write*

*pause writing to wander around underground in the dark, singing do actual work things*

*return to notebook and read what's written to get back into the swing of things*

.... O.o HOLY BLISTERING CROW ON A POGO STICK!!! How did I never before realise that [B] has a massive, massive girlcrush on [A]?! o.O

Ohgod, everything up till now from [A]'s perspective supports this, but she's totally oblivious!

*laughs hysterically* Accidental rezbianism! I has the subtext, but I know not what I do! X3

*eats the rest of her chocolate bar*

So, today at work, I kept sneaking time with my notebook and wrote fic #2 of Kon/Lar.

Except I've decided it really doesn't work for the way I want this to go, so I'll see if the muses will be more cooperative with a second attempt. *sigh* There may be actual porn!

Title: A Game of Cat and Mouse
Fandom: Maniac Love
Characters: Alice Nicholas, Leslie Nicholas, others
Prompt: Badger, badger, badger.
Word Count: 757
Rating: PG for mild swearing.
Summary: Alice's mom (Leslie) needs her help finding something precious -- by phone.

I am sad that the following prompts weren't taken in the last [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest:

Farewell to Harry/Black Death (Quiet Killer), Nick Sennet/Nyles Chapman, book of the month
Farewell to Harry/Black Death (Quiet Killer), Nick Sennet/Nyles Chapman, reporting the news

I may have to write something even though the deadline is past.

From [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory: Give me two female characters in a fandom (or fandoms) I know and I'll attempt to write a conversation between them.

Not sure if I know a fandom? Check my profile (there are actual ladies listed amongst my interests, as well as fandoms!) and my tags. Don't see what you're looking for but still wanna try? Well, go ahead and ask. The worst I can do is say, "sorry, try again." ;3

Believe it or not, there used to be a time when I dealt almost exclusively with female characters. I need to try to reach a well-rounded middle ground, and I'm hoping you'll help me out by giving me a suggestion!

Crossovers I am ABSOLUTELY NOT maybe sorta working on right now:

Century Hotel/Highlander: the Series -- It's very sad that the nicest thing I can see happening to Michael where the movie leaves off is getting shivved in prison and coming back as an Immie. eta: Maybe with Nick from Farewell To Harry making an appearance.

NCIS/DC Comics -- it's time to play nice with the FBI again; this time the NCIS gang have to deal with Agents Jesse, Rathaway, and Rory. Who's smirkier, Tony or the Trickster?

ARGH

Meme gotten from a few places:

Post the first line from your 25 most recent fanfics and try to find a pattern.

(I don't guarantee these are in perfect chronological order. Also, I choose to interpret "line" as "sentence".)

The lines )

The first pattern I notice is that I nearly always establish at least one of the principal characters in the first time, usually the main character. Exceptions to this are usually a)I start with dialogue by the main character, and b) I start off referring to the character by a pronoun, which I thought I did more often, actually. I'm not sure what else to get from this.

Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

Just to be helpful... (or check out what's tagged with "fanfic" in my journal, which you can do by clicking that same tag on this post.)
