AU: The one with Dr. Mary McKay.

Author's note: Another story in my Mary 'verse Stargate AU. Technically still backfilling for my original plotbunny, a process which is more interesting to me at the moment than that bunny (which is basically a crossover between this 'verse and a reality more like canon, spoiler).



When the dust cleared, twenty-six SGC personnel were dead, Vala Mal Doran had gotten away, and Jack wasn't sure he could have Carter and his wife in a room together without them yelling at each other to try to distract themselves from their guilt.

(Except in a backwards sort of way where she does do things to piss him off on purpose in order to amuse him, but unlike the girl in the song, she doesn't think she's getting anywhere or has a chance and furthermore, being DiNozzo, just desperately wants Gibbs' love and approval.)

You know how I write stories where McKay is Dr. Meredith Rhonda McKay, and goes by Ronnie?

This is not one of those.

This is the 'verse with Dr. Meredith Ingrid McKay, who goes by Mary and works at the SGC. I first thought up a story that takes place a lot later on and primarily features that 'verse's O'Neill, but I finished this bit of backstory first.

Okay, so I have this AU where Lorne's a woman and Cadman's a man. Cadman's name is easy enough to parse: Laura = Laurence. Larry. (Ronon is a woman, but since, according the character in the show, Ronon works as a name for a boy or a girl, I'm not changing it. *laziness vindicated!*)

I am waffling about Lorne's first name. Canonical male Lorne is named Evan. Now, there's a variety of female names I can get by extrapolating off that (I've even seen some people claim Evan is a perfectly fine name for a girl.) I've been defaulting to Evangelica (sometimes Evangeline) with Eva as a pet form. The thing is, Evan has been in the top 100 names for boys in the US for a few decades and has been in the top 600 since 1900, whereas neither of those girls' names are nearly so common as that. Hence the waffling. Evelyn has been even more common than Evan, and Eva has stayed in the top 400. I've also seen Evania listed as a feminized form of Evan.
