Platinum Blonde recs
Apr. 17th, 2013 12:15 amAfter my last post, I found myself thinking, "Actually, Cinderella Story isn't even in my top ten for Platinum Blonde songs." And so I am telling y'all what my favourite Platinum Blonde songs are here. ;3
First of all, if you haven't heard of the band, Platinum Blonde are a Canadian band who were big in the 80s (and got back together in 2010). They've been called New Wave, rock, power pop, and rock/pop. *shrugs* They're Platinum Blonde, dude.
(I haven't heard their 2012 album, so none of these songs are from that.)
So! Ely's fave songs, by album:
( (Not to say that I don't like other songs, but they aren't the ones that come right to mind when I get the yen to listen to some Platinum Blone. ;3) )
You may notice there are no links in this post. You have access to search engines; poke Wikipedia and YouTube your own selves. X3

mini playlist
Apr. 16th, 2013 11:45 pmPlatinum Blonde - Cinderella Story (1983)
Bananarama - Gonna Make You Feel Alright (1984)
Motley Crue - Nona (1987)
(Yes, the timestamp on the Bananarama song is deliberate on my part; the first part of the video is a different version of the song, but I couldn't find one of just the one I wanted. I'll change it if I do.)

Code Monkey Save World is HAPPENING
Apr. 15th, 2013 08:28 pmWith 29 days to go, the kickstarter is already past the minimum funds goal. People really really want a graphic novel based on a handful of Jonathan Coulton songs, as it turns out!
After all, it has monkeys, zombies, and robots!

Pipster fanmix
Feb. 24th, 2013 02:33 amOkay, so, here's the song list in order. I don't have any art for it, and I don't have a download link (yet!), but I've put in youtube links for the songs I could find there.
This is arranged to follow the development of the relationship between Pied Piper and Trickster, following canon but injecting a love affair into it. I will try to explain why I chose each song.
( Ten songs, with varying amounts of transcribed lyrics and my explanation, under the cut. )
~FIN~
(for now)

Okay, so back in the summer of 2011 I made a Pipster or Pied Piper & Trickster fanmix. (Which I never shared, because I'm not sure quite how to go about it, I feel like maybe I should make album art, and I suspect I'd have to explain waaaaay more of my personal interpretation of certain metaphysical aspects of Trickster's history than a fanmix really merits.) I just listened to it again for the first time in months, and it still works for me. (So maybe I will work on those issues and eventually share it.)
Now, in my playlists I have one marked "Pipster" and one marked 'Pipster not used", and the latter is basically just the songs that I associate with one or both of the characters, their relationships and shenanigans, etc., but didn't use because the list I finally went with provides a better sort of quasi-narrative continuity, to me.
"Pipster" is 10 songs long.
"Pipster not used" is 22 songs long.
That's more than twice as long! This strikes me as really funny. maybe I should make another couple of playlists? XDI could make one of just songs with the theme of running.

song for Natalia: Nobody's Girl
Nov. 14th, 2012 12:08 amThe guy in the song could be Bucky or Clint or Ivan or basically any man who ever thought he loved her.
( Keeping in mind that one of her codenames was Black Pearl )

music search
Oct. 17th, 2012 12:31 amI wish there was something like Google where, instead of words, you could input a phrase of musical notes and find out what songs they might be from. I've never been good at sight-reading -- I basically have to learn a piece by ear while looking at the page(s) to really get what they mean, something not even 13 years in choir and almost 6 in band cured me of -- and so when I see musical notation in, for example, a comic book, I can't recognise what I'm seeing. I mean, I know sometimes it's probably not from an actual music piece, especially if it's scattered notes or something Piper is using to stop a train. But sometimes it's semi-obvious that the reader is supposed to get something from the music notation, and it would be nice to have some way of looking it up.
So get on that, Internet. (If "there's an app for that", feel free to tell me. Just because I don't like Apple doesn't mean I don't own any.)

Carmen Miranda's Ghost
Oct. 13th, 2012 07:08 amCarmen Miranda's ghost is haunting Space Station Three.
Half the staff has seen her, plus the Portmaster and me.
And if you think we've had too much of Cookie's homemade rum,
Just tell me where those basket-hats of fruit keep coming from.
Don't go down to the cargo-bay when there's no ship in dock.
You just might hear maracas clack and get a nasty shock
And if you hear a rumba-beat, don't pass the messroom door;
You just might see a tangerine come rolling down the floor.
We sometimes catch a glimpse of her, by station night or day,
But when we try to catch her, she just laughs and fades away.
The station's chief headshrinker takes his notes and drains his cup.
We get rotated often, but she still keeps showing up.
We don't know why we're haunted here, or why it's her that haunts.
We've got a betting-pool for all who wonder what she wants.
The best odds say she likes the rhythm of the station's drive;
They didn't have phase-generators while she was alive.
Carmen Miranda's ghost is haunting Space Station Three.
Not that we're complaining, since the fresh fruit all comes free.
But now and then we wonder what it means for the human race
That ghosts of generations past are taking off for space.

So I'm having a Heart video marathon on youtube, for... reasons, and rewatching the video for Nothing At All, I am shocked -- shocked! -- that it's never come up in a Sentinel fic, or at least had all the lovely panther footage cannibalised for a TS fanvid. Seriously. (The kitten is also cute.)
I actually got to see Heart in concert, once. :3

notes (ha!) to myself
Dec. 9th, 2011 11:16 pmSpock plays the Vulcan harp/lute/lyrette (TOS: "Charlie X", "The Conscience of the King", "Amok Time", "The Way to Eden"; Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) and the piano (TOS: "Requiem for Methuselah"). The Platonians forced him to play the kithara and sing (TOS: "Plato's Stepchildren").
McCoy plays the banjo (TOS: "This Side of Paradise").
Scotty plays the bagpipes (seen in his quarters in TOS: "By Any Other Name"; actually played in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan).
Uhura sings (TOS: "Charlie X", "The Conscience of the King", "The Changeling"), hums (TAS: "Once Upon a Planet"), and dances (TOS: "Charlie X", Star Trek V: The Final Frontier). Scenes of her playing the Vulcan harp were cut and are therefore noncanonical. She didn't know how to play the harpsichord except when given the ability by Trelane (TOS: "The Squire of Gothos").
Picard learned to play the (Ressikan) flute (TNG: "The Inner Light", "Lessons", "A Fistful of Datas", Star Trek Nemesis).
Riker plays trombone (TNG: "11001001", "Second Chances", "Future Imperfect", "The Next Phase", "Second Chances", "Thine Own Self") and the piano (TNG: "Unification II"). (Fun fact! It was actually Jonathan Frakes playing the trombone every time we saw Riker play.)
Deanna Troi may or may not play the piano; we see her sitting at one in TNG: "Masterpiece Society".
Data plays the violin (TNG: "In Theory", "Inheritance", "Elementary, Dear Data", "The Ensigns of Command", "Sarek", "Tin Man", Star Trek: Insurrection), classical guitar (TNG: "Silicon Avatar"), and the oboe (TNG: "In Theory"). He also sings (TNG: "In Theory", Star Trek Nemesis).
Worf collects and sings Klingon Opera (TNG: "Unification II"; DS9: "Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places", "In the Cards", "In Purgatory's Shadow", "Penumbra").
Benjamin Sisko plays the piano (DS9: "Image in the Sand", "Shadows and Symbols").
Miles O'Brian plays the cello (TNG: "The Ensigns of Command", "Lessons"; DSP: "Shadowplay"). In fact, he was accepted into the Aldebaran Music Academy but didn't want to go (his father had sent the application), so the day before he was supposed to leave he enlisted in Starfleet instead.
Keiko O'Brian (née Ishikawa) plays the clarinet (TNG: "In Theory").

fanmixing is HARD :(
Jun. 23rd, 2011 10:19 pmMan, making a fanmix is harder than I thought. I figured that the hardest bit would be getting enough songs together for the subject, so I didn't even try until I realised I was associating more than enough songs for mix with the characters in question and their relationship and story.
I have too many songs.
"Just make a big fanmix" isn't the answer, either. I have songs that could be image songs for each of them individually. I have songs which work for both of them and thus demonstrate common ground. I have songs with which I can show the arc of their most recent storyline together. I have songs that work really well as duets about their relationship in general, and at particular points. I have songs which are canonically associated with them.I have songs I associate with their friends/enemies/orther ralationships/other stories trying to sneak in.
Trying to put all these together is problematic. Figuring out which ones to drop if I decide to pare it down is also difficult.
I was gonna make this and then present it to a fancomm for the other fans of the characters to share in, but now I'm wondering if I should make a post there asking for some opinions. Maybe a poll. I'm not sure if that's even appropriate to the comm, and I kinda don't want to ruin the surprise.
Maybe I should just give them a jumble of songs arranged by loose category. :/

Finding 'Finding Beauty'
Apr. 7th, 2011 02:07 amSomewhere along the way, I ended up in possession of a K/S fanmix called "Finding Beauty". I'm not sure who put it together, because between getting it and listening to it were several months and at least 2 computers.
It's gorgeous.
Whoever it was that made this fanmix, I salute you. Not only are the songs themselves beautiful, but they all fit. Kirk and Spock have, to me, something epic and textured and deep and wonderful, occasionally painfully flawed, occasionally so perfect it hurts. This fanmix shows that.

Wanna listen to Michael Weatherly's demo?

Melancholy and regretful and occasionally snarky, so far. Apparently some of these have been used in the NCIS soundtrack? As have a song or two from Pauley's band?
I lovelovelove Bitter & Blue.

That musical/pairing meme
Apr. 5th, 2010 06:31 am[Blues Brothers]This meme is like a rash all over my f-list.[/Blues Brothers] Looked like fun, let's see what I get.
-Write down twenty of your favorite pairings/threesomes/etc.
-Put your media player on shuffle. The number of the song corresponds to the number of the pairing.
-Quote a part of the song that you think has any similarity with the couple.
( I was worried I couldn't think of 20 couples... )
