I confess, I don't understand why people write "high school AU" stories for Tim Drake and Steph Brown. They actually went to high shcool together, guys. You don't have to call it an AU if it's set then. If it's a no capes AU set in high school, call it a "no capes AU". Seriously.

Dating in high school is not AU for them. They actually did that.

How old do these people think they are?

Post with a character from a fandom I follow, and I'll respond with...

* How I FEEEEEL about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

FYI, fandoms I have more recently gotten into include: The Losers, Magnificent Seven (the TV show, not the movie), and Invaders (the Marvel team that started in WWII era -- I was already into them, but I'm much more so lately). I'm also having a Highlander renaissance. Let this information influence you as you will~

Okay, so back in the summer of 2011 I made a Pipster or Pied Piper & Trickster fanmix. (Which I never shared, because I'm not sure quite how to go about it, I feel like maybe I should make album art, and I suspect I'd have to explain waaaaay more of my personal interpretation of certain metaphysical aspects of Trickster's history than a fanmix really merits.) I just listened to it again for the first time in months, and it still works for me. (So maybe I will work on those issues and eventually share it.)

Now, in my playlists I have one marked "Pipster" and one marked 'Pipster not used", and the latter is basically just the songs that I associate with one or both of the characters, their relationships and shenanigans, etc., but didn't use because the list I finally went with provides a better sort of quasi-narrative continuity, to me.

"Pipster" is 10 songs long.

"Pipster not used" is 22 songs long.

That's more than twice as long! This strikes me as really funny. maybe I should make another couple of playlists? XD I could make one of just songs with the theme of running.

So I was on tumblr, looking through the charlie-x tag in hopes of finding a gif of Kirk getting slapped on the butt (no luck, alas) and I came across a post to the general gist of, "WTF? Uhura is singing and dancing while Spock plays a harpthing. What is this shit? I'm watching Star Trek, not GLEE! Get this music out of here!"

And I just had to laugh, because seriously, if you think this is unusual behaviour in a Star Trek episode, you are obviously painfully new to the fandom. In fact, TOS is the least likely of the bunch to have this sort of thing happen, IIRC. Certainly Kirk is the only Captain to demonstrate no musical ability beyond dancing.

(P.S. If any of you have a gif of Kirk gettingbuttslapped, please post it!)

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] taichara at surely, a perfect definition of Mary Sue.
Over on the Exalted forums some months ago (I missed this only because I deliberately skipped this thread due to the title, oops), Dex Davican posted what I, personally, think is the point-perfect definition of a Mary Sue or Gary Stu, or whatever.

To whit, a "Mary Sue":

A character who redefines an otherwise-coherent setting around them through sheer narrative weight, rather than through personal qualities. There are many traits that Mary Sues tend to exhibit (mostly to make them seem "distinctive" or "unique"), but ultimately none of those traits adequately explain the effects that the character has on the setting or the people within it.

Common (but not required) signs of a Sue:
-Other characters like or grow obsessed with the character, without real evidence of what is likeable or obsession-worthy about them.
-The character believes his/herself to be an outsider, but isn't really treated as such.
-Morally-questionable actions become acceptable when the character performs them, and may or may not remain so ever after. Conversely, people who oppose the character steadily become more monstrous.
-If in a pre-existing setting, the character is not only the protagonist of the current story, but begins to take over the stories of pre-existing protagonists, sometimes warping those prior protagonists into a form more acceptable for the new shape of the story. In some cases, the character changes the very rules of the setting.
-The character is talented at anything and everything, often with a notable exception that is important to the character and negligible in its impact on the story, except to emphasize the character's belief that they are an outsider.

This is, frankly, brilliant in its succinctness. Bravo, Dex.

I just spent a couple of days going through Stephanie Brown fan tumblrs, and then today I checked on my regularly followed Titans tumblrs.

It's like taking a swig of acid after enjoying a lovely milkshake and waffles. It's like getting puked on. Ugh. The Steph fen were so much more optimistic! And were nicer when they ranted! And were not just randomly horrible!

God damn it, I love the Titans, but I think I may have to divorce their online fandom again.

*uses awesome Donna icon for comfort, goes off to hug cats and/or plushies, and reread Steph's Batgirl series*

Somewhere along the way, I ended up in possession of a K/S fanmix called "Finding Beauty". I'm not sure who put it together, because between getting it and listening to it were several months and at least 2 computers.

It's gorgeous.

Whoever it was that made this fanmix, I salute you. Not only are the songs themselves beautiful, but they all fit. Kirk and Spock have, to me, something epic and textured and deep and wonderful, occasionally painfully flawed, occasionally so perfect it hurts. This fanmix shows that.

A while back, Melissa Uran posted a couple of Namor paperkids -- you know, chibis meant to be cut out and pinned/taped/pinched between fingers so that it looks like they're actually being dangled by the sticking point.

Well, lately she's been doing more! And different characters! (Though all Marvel.)
Doctor Strange!
Loki!
Deadpool!
Ironman, Captain America, and Deadpool! (And that Deadpool in colour!)
My favourite so far: Captain America & Deadpool, Aurora, and Northstar!

Fruit of the day: Delcious Monster. (I am not kidding, that's what it's called.)

Books I bought today:

Mirror Dance by Lois McMaster Bujold. A Vorkosigan book, yay! Now I can get some background on Mark! *excited*

Pegasus In Space by Anne McCaffrey. I read the one before it, and a bunch that take place decades later, but I never got my hands on this one before.

Sassinak by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Moon. I used to own this, but my mom's dog destroyed it. Been jonesin' to read it again, so I snapped it up.

Space Opera which looks to be an anthology of music-themed scifi short stories, edited by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough.

Fiddler Fair, which is a poorly structured collection of short stories by Mercedes Lackey. Another one I used to own and wanted again.

Reserved For The Cat by Mercedes Lackey. Haven't read anything else in the 'Elemental Masters' setting, but eh. *shrugs* This is about a French ballerina, and you see, once a long time ago, before Lackey took issue with her Tregarde books, she promised a book involving the vampire character in those which would involve French ballerinas. My memory of that, combined with OH HEY TALKING CAT (which I am, alas, a complete sucker for) is why I bought this 'un.

These last two are both Star Trek (TOS) novels --

Renegade by Gene Deweese (or possibly DeWeese -- it's always DEWEESE in the text on and in the book). Spock and McCoy apparently killed! Kirk doubting the Prime Directive! One of the few at the store that didn't involve Klingons and/or Romulans! eta: Involves Klingons.

The Tears of the Singers by Melinda Snodgrass. This one has Klingons in. But it also has Uhura on the cover wearing pants, and is furthermore some kind of metaphor about seal-clubbing, I begin to suspect. But it has Uhura singing, so I will put up with it. Probably.

Notable non-book purchase of the day: TMNT (2007) on DVD. Turtle power, dudes!

So, over on Jeff's Gameblog there is a lovely tradition: SHATNERDAY. He posts a picture of William Shatner on Shatnerdays. Yesterday, it was Shatner and Nimoy eating from paper plates.

YUL BRYNNER.

Yes.

Okay, so, the city of Atlantis, being riddled with advanced computers built by the same folk as made stargates and whatnot, has a database. The Ancient database, the people living there call it in the show, to distinguish it from the database they have set up for their own computers. They work on translating it (Elizabeth), they sent as much as they could to the SGC when they thought they were going to be destroyed, and sometimes when they find something in the city -- or of Ancient origin but not in the city -- they see if they can find info in the database on it.

Now, finding information in the database on a specific but unidentified object is generally problematic, because they don't know what to search for, for one thing, and also because figuring out the filing method in the database has posed some difficulty. The Alterans didn't exactly use the Dewey Decimal System.

Planets are a little easier; by the end of the second season they've clearly located a list of planets that have stargates on them, and also orbital 'gates. Much easier to know when to use a puddlejumper and avoid wandering into vacuum that way. We've seen in the show that sometimes the database has notes about various planets, for example if there was an outpost there, if there was some experiment being conducted there, etc. And sometimes, there's nothing. Like in "Doppleganger" --

McKAY: Look, do you have any idea how many Gate addresses there are in the Ancient database that have no accompanying description?

SHEPPARD: Forty-two.

McKAY: No, I think it's a little more than that. Look, I don't really remember. That's not the point. Nothing -- no information at all. I say that has to mean something.

SHEPPARD: Maybe it means there's nothing worth writing about on those planets.

Now, it makes sense for them to check the database when they're choosing planets to explore (as opposed to conducting trade from contacts made on other worlds, although they probably also check it then) and you can bet they've scoured it for stuff like "ZPM factory".

But here's the thing: any entry in the database is a minimum of ten THOUSAND years old. They are not going to find information about the cultures currently inhabiting any of the planets, because those cultures were not AROUND back then! And yet in fic after fic after fic, I see this illogical bit of fanon.

It's irritating. Like a rash.

Choose a fandom you know I'm into. It can be anything: tv series, book, anime, video game, movie, whatever. Post with the fandom, and I'll answer the following questions:

1. How long have you been a fan?

2. What got you interested?

3. How active are you in this fandom?

4. Explain one canon aspect of this fandom you like.

5. Explain one canon aspect of this fandom you dislike.

6. (and 7.) As above, only for fanon.

8. If there was a sequel tomorrow, what would you want to see?

I have acknowledged, here and other places, that I have a... crossover problem. Usually this shows up on livejournal as fanfiction and roleplay, or speculation thereof.

But you see, I do fanart, too.

Cracky, cracky fanart.

Recently I uploaded some examples to my deviantArt account, and I share some with you here, so that you may boggle at my insanity. X3

First up, two Megaman X characters redesigned along My Little Pony lines.

Axl is too adorable for words

No matter how high he rears, pony Zero can't get his impressively long mane off the ground (there are some amusing disadvantages to being transformed XD)

The rest need a little bit more explanation. If you've ever watched Ronin Warriors or Yoroiden Samurai Troopers, chances are good you've seen Ryo do his signature attack (Sou En Zan or Flare Up Now, depending on show). And if you've ever seen Samurai Pizza Cats, you've very likely seen Speedy Service do that exact same thing almost. Given the latter is a parody of all kinds of things, this doesn't shock me, but once upon a time I got obsessed with a really silly idea. So, these next two fanarts are from a Ronin Warrios/Samurai Pizza Cats fusion.

Yes, that's right, catboys! And also a fox dude in pink! For some reason only the fanarts involving Warlords ninja crows ...the adversaries survived, although I have a Ronin Cats fanfic or two floating around... (and if no one stops me in time, I may post one!)

Also, when I say "obsessed"? I really mean it. Cat breeds, henshins and attacks, personality and physical descriptions, an analysis of Talpaw's organization.... Yeah. I drove everyone nuts. XD

A very young Dayhiss meets Talpaw for the first time

Dayhiss helps Sekhmet hurriedly change his clothes for a meeting with the boss after a mission

So, there you have it. I'm going to scurry off to work now and hope the men in white coats don't intercept me. XD

It doesn't matter which of the many many Gundam series or continuities you're dealing with, the point of a Gundam show is not the mobile suit fights, it's why they're fighting and what the human consequences of fighting are.

The fights are just lovely lovely eye candy for us mecha fans. :D

Right. So. I'm sure many of you remember the 90s X-Men cartoon? Here's the theme song played on guitar. (AWESOME!)

...But how many of you remember the 80s X-Men cartoon? Aha, thought so. Wanna watch the cracky theme song?

While we're talking theme songs, someone set footage from the live-action Spider-Man movies to the 60s Spiderman cartoon theme song, which is fairly cool.

Also: I am researching Spider-man and His Amazing Friends, which I have never seen. I've found this website, which looks pretty neat, and also some episodes online -- anyone who actually watched/remmebers the show want to recommend an ep for viewing? I'm already determined to watch "The Origin of The Iceman" and "Vengeance of Loki", of course.

(Okay, really I'm making this post to see what all the fuss is about the new update screen. I was also just forced to update my WMP to get any music to play, and also my PDF reader. That time of year, it seems.)

So, okay, I'm behind and I just read 52 #31 and I gotta say, I sincerely hope Captain Comet is dead, because he was fairly likeable and if he's not? That's gotta suck. #32 had some stuff I'm sure I'll get once my brain kicks in.

I've been reading Trials of Shazam and I hate the art for the first few pages pretty much every issue. I keep reading it, though, because a) FREDDIE, b) Marvels, and c) FREDDIE. This most recent issue had Achilles and I just need to say yes. I am a closet Iliad fangirl, and yes, that works for me DC, go with that. Especially the little almost-flirt with Freddie. (Freddie, being a very pretty guy, is used to these random almost-flirts and was unruffled. Yay Freddie! :D)

What else what else... OH! Justice Society. If you have a Starman or Legion love, pick it up, people. Way to be a total tease, DC. I'm avoiding Legion World for a while until there's a chance the Dawnstar fanboys have cooled down. I really hope that's "Danny"/Thom... I think? :O He's totally nuts, that's unhappy.

And finally I get my hands on Yu Yu Hakusho #11 in English. It's been a while since I read it in French.

Getting up an hour early (because I couldn't breathe. Curse you, phlegm!) should not lead to becoming so very bored that I want to go back to bed and right about the time the alarm goes off. Argh.

Have some Final Fantasy related stuff.

Well, firstly, today's Two Lumps comic is FF7 related.

Secondly, click below the cut to read an amusing secret from FF8 play. I am quoting this from this post on mirusama's DeviantArt gallery, which also illustrates the occurence. I like her "While Saving the World" strips as well.

I suppose technically I'm paraphrasing instead of quoting, since I cleaned up some spelling errors. I was just that bored.

This is that lj-cut I mentioned above )

There is no thirdly.

I can't find the cable I need to sync my PDA to my PC. Any psychics out there who could use their amazing powers to tell me where it is? I want to post some pictures I took.

Edit: Okay, took a nap and a shower, feel better. Inexplicably have "Joxer the Mighty" (with sidekick variant lyrics) stuck in my head, but that happens now and then in the shower. No idea why.

...It occurs to me that enthusiastically bopping along to Eat the Rich while eating soup is maybe a little odd. I can't help it! I wants redcaps! >:D I wants a gutsy Nocker singing this as karaoke at a bar frequented by a leather-and-spikes gang of Redcaps! >XD

Followed by Get a Grip, because, duh.

Edit: And let's add KISS's Silver Spoon to this guy's personal soundtrack. Fun stuff considering the only thing I know he built was a prom dress for his baby sister - made of duct tape, primarily.

...Someone should talk me out of writing previousincarnation!fic (set in either the 30s or the 70s) with small town good girl (Iceman)Luisa and (Northstar)Martin Saint-John, the beautiful drifter she scandalizes the town by falling for, since he is *GASP* black. They should talk me out of this because it would be very sappy, and also because I'm not really great with either of these time periods.

...I want Temeraire fic. :( I'd like young Laurence running away to sea, or Granby-pov of Laurence's arrival through to heart-felt apology. Slash not being the preference. Does it exist?

...All the "oh noes Blair got hurt! D:" fic is starting to make me itch to write a counter-fic, since Jim gets smashed up way way more often. Post-"dangling under a train", perhaps, or post-"kidnapped and drugged by evil CIA agents", maybe. B| I begin to suspect that hurt/comfort is unavoidable, and furthermore that in justifiable cases is good. Must test theory somehow.

...I want an icon of X with his arms spread and a quote from the song "Speak" from Operation:MindCrime superimposed on it. >:} DOCTOR X.
(Maybe a series of Zero-as-Nikki icons is in order? I don't have the art to do this; I checked.)

...The other day as I was walking into a building on campus, I took my hair down because I was getting a slight headache. I was aware that there were two girls behind me, because I remember using their chattering to judge whether they were too close for me to take my hair down.
Me: *undoes hair*
Girl 1: WOW.
Girl 2: Double you. Oh. Double you.
Me: *ego is stroked*
:D Thought I'd share. ;3

Some Like It Red is the name of the due South episode wherein Fraser goes undercover as a female teacher at an all-girls school. (See icon.) Now, I have never seen this episode. However, this video on YouTube seems to cover a lot of the pertinent scenes. :3 There's also, at the end of the video, the last scene from the episode, which I love. As much as I love Kowalski, it's nice to be reminded why I loved Vecchio, too. And also to see Fraser's sense of humour.
eliyes: (hide-guitar)
There's a lot of really good fic out there that just isn't, to me, good enough. I mean, fantastic stories, good premises, pacing fine, plot works well, jokes are funny, smut is hot, etc. -- it can all be there, but still not be good enough if the voices are wrong. Recently, while reading fic for The Sentinel, I stumbled across fic for due South and was distracted quite effectively for quite some time.

Why? )
eliyes: (I have an idea)
Since she knows I fell face and eyes back into the due South fandom recently, [livejournal.com profile] sinfonica provided me with these two quotes from Paul Gross (who plays Fraser) on slash fanfiction, which he seems quite pleased by.

"I suppose the character is public ground. If you're willing to bring it into people's houses every week, the [fans] are entitled to certain liberties, wherever their imagination is carried by those characters." - Paul Gross (actor) on due South slash fanfiction, quoted in the Toronto Globe & Mail, August 8, 1998.

I like this one especially since I get a real kick out of Ray Kowalski and think Paul's right on the money here - but the show makes it so easy! ;3

"I tell you, slash fiction is going to go crazy when they see the new guy. He is really good-looking and sexy, the dangerous side of Fraser. It will be totally homoerotic." - Paul Gross (actor) on the Fraser/Kowalski subtext in due South, quoted in Elm Street magazine, October 1997.

...Now take into account that Paul Gross was the Executive Producer on the seasons with the new sexy Ray and the homoerotic whatever...
