The Robin Hood Foundation, a charity aimed at alleviating poverty (and funding disaster relief) in the New York City area -- you can read what wikipedia has to say about them here and what they say about themselves here -- has come up with a really cute idea for raising money to put roofs over the heads of homeless families this holiday season.

Check out Gingerbread BNB.

You book a virtual stay in one of three gingerbread houses, and 100% of the money goes to sheltering homeless families. Every $100 (USD, I presume) gives one family a home for the night, but the options are tailored to how much you can afford to give. The Cozy Camper is $5 a night, the Rustic Cabin is $10 a night, and the Modern Home is $20 a night, and you choose how many nights your stay will be. The descriptions are cute and funny, and if you donate (which you can also do as a gift for someone), you get a postcard of your virtual stay and the warm fuzzy feeling of helping contribute to help people in need.

This is a great hook for a charity fund drive, and I hope more such charities follow Robin Hood's path of this kind of appealing innovation.

Okay, so the Rawlemon solar collector is an awesome idea and more efficient than photovoltaic panels and will work on parts of the globe where PV panels are just not getting enough sunlight for them to be worth their expense. And they collect solar energy from the moon. That's very cool, and the ickle beta.ey gizmos that can charge a phone look pretty neat.

But I see no reason why we can't have those and Solar Roadways.

Check out this awesome shit:

C'mon, you know you want the giant crystal balls plus the light-up roads, okay. I sure do.

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

"The EU is now the last hope to stop the dangerous international intellectual property treaty, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. ACTA will destroy the openness of the internet and threatens free speech online by forcing websites and ISPs to watch and track our every move, all in the name of copyright protection.

ACTA will soon make its way to the European Parliament for a full consent vote. If approved, people around the world will have their fundamental rights decimated. Without EU approval, ACTA will have go back to the drawing board and force countries to renegotiate the treaty. The parliament MUST vote 'No' on ACTA. The world is watching, and we need to demand that members of the European Parliament show true global leadership and oppose this outrageous measure." - AccessNow.org

In other words, regardless where you live (including outside of the EU), the more countries that signs this bill the more dangerous it becomes. In the long run--if it gains more ground--this will affect the internet as a whole and therefore it will affect YOU.

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text

So, what would be "better" than SOPA?

If it were INTERNATIONAL!

Meet ACTA. ACTA stands for Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, an international trade agreement currently negotiated by the European Union, the United States, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Australia, and more. The negotiations have been SECRET. Leaked documents pertaining to those secret negotiations reveal alarming curtailing of personal liberty for internet users on a global scale. Learn more about ACTA here and here.

From the EFF page:
"The agreement requires signatory countries to “endeavor to promote cooperative efforts within the business community” to address copyright and trademark infringement. This could lead to “voluntary agreements” by Internet intermediaries to restrict Internet access and to monitor and censor Internet communications under threat of legislation or criminal sanctions. Read together with ACTA’s broad injunction powers, this will exacerbate existing pressures on Internet intermediaries to monitor, censor and block online communications, and stifle freedom of expression across the globe."

Last year The UN declared internet access a Human Right. Doesn't it seem like governments have been working hard on ways to violate that right ever since?

So. The day after the SOPA & PIPA protests, we get the announcement that while they were happening, the FBI and/or other agents of the USA Justice Department shut down Megaupload and arrested several of its executives on criminal conspiracy charges relating to copyright violation and online piracy.

Which begs the question: if they can do that with existing laws, why do they need SOPA or PIPA?

(An astounding number of news sources are reporting that Anonymous's protest actions was retaliation for the Megaupload thing, despite Anonymous making it pretty clear why they did what they did. These news sources are mostly quoting each other, which is how stupidity feeds on itself, children. I linked to the BBC because it sensibly didn't say anything of the sort, but had to mention the phenomenon.)

A couple of links for my fellow Canucks:
What SOPA means for Canada and SOPA would have a big impact on Canada: law professor says US law would actually target foreign websites, which, DUH, this has been obvious from the start! And is the main reason why I have wanted to punch certain Canadians in the face recently. (It might kickstart their brains, who knows?)

Supposedly SOPA and PIPA will be amended before being passed, primarily to remove the DNS redirect facet -- but they're saying they're taking it out because internet security experts have warned them that it would make things much easier for hackers, while at the same time saying they're committed to the idea of DNS redirecting as a security measure. We will see how things turn out.

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] issendai at WARNING: Purina pet food has started making pets ill

My coworker John told me that his cat was seriously ill--throwing up, lethargic, refusing food, dropping weight. The previously healthy 6-year-old, 15-pound cat had lost a third of her body weight over the last few months. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with her. Blood tests were clean, and she didn't have any known illnesses. Yet she was a few days from organ failure.

That was a week ago. She's fine now. The solution was... to stop feeding her Purina cat food.

When John told me that, and said that friends of his had the same problem with their cats and Purina cat food, I looked into it. Holy shit. Take a look at the consumer complaints about Purina cat and dog food. This exact same problem has been an issue with Purina pet foods since 2007, but since this summer, the rate of complaints has picked up drastically. People who previously had no problems with Purina are reporting issues. Comment after comment sounds the same:

I've been feeding my three cats Fancy Feast canned food Chopped Grill Feast for many years. They have always devoured their meal and licked the plates clean. Last week, I noticed they did not want to eat much and went from plate to plate, ate a little. Next day, none of them would eat it. I kept trying new cans. What they did eat made them vomit and one cat was lethargic for days. I refuse to buy any more of this food. It's very scary. I don't know what is wrong with the food, but I fear it has toxins in it. I switched to another brand and the cats are fine now. Did anyone else experience this?

-----

My dogs have been eating Purina Dog Chow (green bag) for about four years. They used to eat only Iams, but due to financial issues, we had to go with a cheaper brand. The last bag I purchased was about a week and a half ago. My 14 years old Labrador has vomited about 5-6 times and my German Shepherd has vomited about 4 times. Something is wrong with this food! The food has a kind of metallic smell to it. It just does not smell right. I'm taking it back to the pet store. I am changing my dogs' food, it's just not worth taking the chance to save a few dollars.

-----

We purchased a large bag of Purina One Salmon dry cat food to give to a needy pet owner. She emailed us a couple of days later ,to say that there were maggots, lots of them with what looked to be like strands or webs with more dead gnats or flies, pieces of web in the food and "shells" of gnats or flies in the bag. Cats would not eat much of the food and, fortunately, they did not get sick. The store had noticed this problem in other bags and was willing to swap out.

-----

I purchased a 34 lb bag of Purina One Smartblend dog food every three to four weeks for my two Labradors. The last bag I purchased seemed fine until I noticed a new infestation of little black bugs. Upon further inspection through the contents of the bag, I noticed clusters of white "eggs" adhered to quite a bit of the food. Some of these clusters contained larvae in the process of hatching. I immediately threw out the remaining contents of the bag but did save samples for my vet.

We went out of town last weekend and had friends dog sit for us. We originally attributed their lethargy and random vomiting to separation anxiety. Although they are doing better, I am still concerned and will be watching them closely. As stated, I saved samples of the infested dog food for our vet in the event that anything results from this issue.

-----

I recently switched to the Friskies Poultry Variety pack (32 cans) that says it must be used by August 2013 (12281789 09:31 lo61237) sku (050000454242). I have 5 cats and feeding them this food, I noticed some of them throwing up. There's nothing in it but liquids, no hair ball, no food, nothing. My cats range from 8 weeks to 13 years old.

I switched my own cats to Purina a couple of months ago, and their coats look so much better than they did on the old brand of cat food... but Buffy has started vomiting stomach liquids. Purina and Fancy Feast are off the menu. Permanently.

I have no idea why this isn't news. But if you're feeding your pets any Purina brand, please don't wait for media confirmation that something is going on. Stop feeding your pets Purina immediately.

Today -- November 16, 2011 -- the US Congress is holding hearings about a possible American Internet censorship system. If this bill is passed, it will not only affect every 'net user and service provider in the states, it will set a terrible precedent for the rest of the world as well. Find out more here

(And if anyone can tell me how to get that code to work on LJ, let me know!)

You know that tool in most photo-editing programs that lets you sample a colour in what you're working on and then use it? It's usually called a "colo(u)r-picker"?

Here's one that works in real life. You hold it up to something you want to sample the colour of, scan that, and the pen reproduces the colour in its ink.

Is that not wonderful? 8D
