Things I was writing
Jun. 3rd, 2014 08:15 pmRecently I've been doing spring cleaning, furniture re-arranging, and junk culling. This has lead to me finding a lot of my notebooks, and I've found fics I've already posted here, and fics I never finished, original sci-fi settings, doodles, D&D character sheets and campaign notes, journal entries of the not-to-be-shared variety, outlines for various stories and AUs...
The two things that stand out to me are,
A) I have an actual in-progress novella set in the Stargate SG-1 s10e13 "The Road Not Taken" universe, post-episode. And it's actually pretty good! I wish I could remember where I was going with it, exactly, so I could pick it back up, but even the outline I found only went so far. (Also, I have a note and it's relevant in what's written that McKay has asthma instead of hypoglycemia, and I wonder why. Is that in the show...? I'll have to rewatch the episode...)
and
B) Several pages of a Young Hercules fanfic. I, uh... what?
Okay, so I've not made it a secret I was into the whole Hercules: The Legendary Journeys/Xena: Warrior Princess/Young Hercules series setting thing. I'm pretty sure I posted links to my fave Widow Twanky fanvid, and that filk about Callisto. I used to use an icon of Iolaus from Young Hercules on this very journal! But I don't think I've written any fanfic in that universe other than... this.
It's Our Heroic Foursome running into Anticlea, who's about their age in the story, and... *scratches head* Mythologically speaking, she's the daughter of Autolycus and the mother of Odysseus, both of whom are Herc's contemporaries in the show 'verse. (Granted, so is Iolaus. He's supposed to be his nephew, princely son of King Iphicles.) I wish I knew where I was going with this story, too! But less because I want to finish it and more because I'm confused. XD

My subconscious is apparently convinced that if Brickhouse (from Milestone's Blood Syndicate) and Empress (from DC's Young Justice) met, they would get along great. Hell, maybe Anita can use her magic to do something about Marta's amnesia...
My subconscious also stuck me in an extended heart-pounding subtarranean chase scene with ATF versions of the Magnificent 7 (TV show version). I'm pretty sure I was Ezra Standish for part of it.
But the best part, the absolute best part, was my brain going "YOU HAVE JUST FOUND AN AWESOME AND VERY LONG AU FICTION ABOUT ZAX AND CLOUD AS PART OF AN INTERGALACTIC PEACEKEEPING ORGANIZATION OF SOLDIERS AND LAWMEN AND BOUNTY HUNTERS--" oh fuck it looked SO COOL, so I bookmarked it --

Some random things
Dec. 15th, 2011 01:05 am♣ Sometimes Miles Vorkosigan's Admiral Naismith persona makes me think someone combined Elim Garak and Julian Bashir. Which might explain why I get a kick out of him despite sometimes having to facepalm mightily.
♣ The other day I was looking at pictures of Callisto (from Xena) and the actress who played her, and I was struck by how much she looks like someone genderswapped Cary Elwes.
♣ I keep getting tempted to compile a collection of short excerpts from TOS novels and post them as prompts for AOS fic. Starting with Uhura and Spock, all gussied up for a night at the symphony, popping by Kirk's office and inviting him to come with them, from Tears of the Singers.
♣ So, I found a tumblr which exists for the sole purpose of sorting Star Trek characters into Hogwarts houses. So far I've only strongly disagreed with one! Check it out.
♣ *juggles hundreds of plot bunnies, sighing*
♣ You know what two characters seem a lot alike to me? Reep Daggle and Hikaru Sulu. And yet, I doubt issue #3 of Star Trek/Legion of Superheroes (the crossed-over people are only meeting in issue three, and it's a mini-series) will portray that.

In the 2009 movie, from the end of Act I onward, Chekov is 17*, and McCoy is 31. Subsequently, a lot of the McCoy/Chekov ficcers out there have McCoy agonizing about having to wait until Chekov's 18 to make any kind of move on him (and several artists have made this a not-very-funny running gag).
What they aren't taking into account, apparently, is that a) we have no official "age of consent" ever specified in Star Trek (although 15 was mentioned for Human males in TNG -- or at least for Riker), and that b) right now in the real world the age of consent in the country of Russia AND the American State of Georgia is 16.
So really, they're good to go.
*which is nonsensical, since Chekov was 22 in "Who Mourns for Adonais?" which took place in late 2267 and therefore he should have been 13 in 2258 (which is when he said he was 17, since Pike met Jim in 2255 and everything from the Kobayashi Maru test onwards happens "Three Years Later"), and there is no reason whatsoever that the Kelvin's encounter with the Narada and all the changes that wrought on Jim Kirk's life should have caused Pavel Andreievich Chekov to be born four years early!

So, in the novel The Wounded Sky, there's a scene where Enterprise crewmen in a Rec area are singing. One of the songs begins with what I've quoted in my subject line. A fast Google search netted me the rest of the lyrics -- apparently this was a popular filk in the 70s, but I can't find a recording of it now, alas.
Set to the tune of John Denver's "Calypso":
To sail on a dream in the sun-fretted darkness,
To soar through the starlight unfrightened, alone,
To work in the service of life and the living,
In search of the answers to questions unknown,
To be part of the movement, and part of the growing,
Part of beginning to understand,
Enterprise, starship, the places you've been to,
The things that you've shown us, the stories you'd tell!
Enterprise, starship, we sing to your spirit,
The beings who have served you so long and so well.
Like the starfire that guides you as we ride inside you,
You shine in the darkness and lead us aright,
And though we are strangers in your silent spaces,
While we're in your world we can learn from your night,
To be constant as stars, to reach ever outward,
Laughing and loving and being the light!
Enterprise, starship, the places you've been to,
The things that you've shown us, the stories you'd tell!
Enterprise, starship, we sing to your spirit,
The beings who have served you so long and so well.

The perils of shipper portmanteaux
Jan. 28th, 2009 08:20 pmSo, I just poked a fanfic that was introed as "McShep" and then also specified to be "John/Rodney".
The Department of Redundancy Department called --
McShep is McKay/Sheppard, and thus the John/Rodney was unnecessary repetition -- EXCEPT that you could conceivable have pre-marriage Jeannie McKay and John. Or you might need to specify if this were a gender-swap AU where in your McShep is, like, Joan and Meredith.
At this point in my ponderings, my brain jumped fandoms, and then I was thinking Special Agent McGee and Director Shepard --
THESE THINGS ARE DANGEROUS.
Oh well. At least "McShep" doesn't sound like a venereal disease, unlike, for example, "Squinoa".

random post is random!
Oct. 23rd, 2008 07:13 pmHeroClix acquired since the last time I talked about my HeroClix Army: Killer Frost, Icicle, Mento, Dr. Light (the good girl one), and Bouncing Boy. a) Yes, I am collecting ice-themed figs, I have five so far. b) OMFG CHUCK TAINE ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Legion forever! 8D
I think they should make a HeroClix of Amanda Waller. It will say "The Wall" on the base and her special ability will be to increase the effectiveness of any Suicide Squad members in play. This ability will be called "crack the whip". ;D
Read the latest ish of Booster Gold today and am still laughing over him hitting on Skeets. Is that how you always reward brilliance, Booster? Wow, that'll make writing Booster/Beetle easier. X3
Picked up issues 24 & 25 of Mutant X (I blame
dlasta). These would be the issues where Hank regains and then re-loses his brilliance, and also cures Iceman of his whole not-being-able-to-change-back-or-touch-anyone thing. Bob is faintly punk, it amuses me. I'm pretty sure Cap thought he was being hit on, though. XD This is actually a kind of interesting team... (Why do I collect AUs? WHY? Is it a symptom of my basic dissatisfaction with the main-line Marvel U?) Still, Brute has an interesting design. The grab-bag of Mutant X artists seem to have a better track record for deciding whether or not Hank has digitigrade legs and sticking by that choice than the sods on any X-Men book in the last *mumble* years.
Ever found a fanfic writer who has an uncanny knack for writing stories with premises you find really interesting, about characters you really like -- but writes those characters in a way that you find repellently OOC? *sigh* This is worse if it's in a smaller fandom. I am mildly frustrated.
Meanwhile, writing my
random_30 prompt list in my notebook has been useful, and I wish I'd thought of it sooner.
Oh! Oh! I forgot to mention! Camelot 3000 is being released in a deluxe hardcover trade! *happy dance*
