Give me a character (or ten) from any fandom you know I'm in, and I'll let you know:
* How I FEEEEEL about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Date: 2011-10-03 12:04 pm (UTC)THIS IS TOTALLY INCOHERENT (and contradicts itself in places)
Date: 2011-10-03 01:44 pm (UTC)* Okay, first of all I feel that Mamoru got the most character development of his three versions in the original manga, even though it's technically shorter than the anime and (comparing how many episodes it took to cover the same story arc) PGSM. He's cuter in the manga, too, in how he acts and how he looks. He said he didn't have powers (like Sailor Moon's), but he did have some. He was just more useful, and more tragic, and still a bit of a trolling dick. XD Also I like his glasses. But when he's being a troll, especially when he's being a troll to cover confusion, amnesia, or strong emotion, I love him best. In the manga he's never as mean as he can be in the anime. Also his thing with the shitennou, in the manga and PGSM, makes me all teary, damn it. THE LOYALTY, IT GOES BOTH WAYS, AND EVEN AMNESIA AND BRAINWASHING NEVER TOTALLY SEVER IT. I LOVE THAT. That's not as strong in the anime.
But poor Mamoru, he got robbed of personality in favour of becoming The Bishie Boyfriend. And also he was killed at least once. And Neo-Queen Serenity is going to brainwash him and take over his planet! That sucks. But that's not Mamoru anymore, since we don't know how they got to that point, so let's ignore it.
* So this list is basically Usagi and Fiore. There are plenty of other characters interested in Mamoru, but these are the only two people with whom he seems to return the romantic interest. And I'm not sure his feelings for Fiore were romantic, given their ages when they met, but it's obvious they both felt something very strong. And I feel like Usagi will never totally understand Mamoru, but he understands her better than she understands herself sometimes, and I'm okay with that.
I AM NOT OKAY WITH NEO-QUEEN SERENITY, IF THAT WASN'T CLEAR.* Mamoru and Motoki are BROS FOREVER! In all versions! Even though Motoki in PGSM is very different from in the manga and anime -- but PGSM!Motoki also gets more screen time, is a complete sweetheart, and is nice to cranky weirdoes from Jigoku, to the extent that it strongly looked like Nephrite decided to stay human when his power began to come back in part because of Motoki's friendship. Also, he's the only Motoki that bridges Mamoru's current life and friendships with those of Endymion.
Which brings us to the shintennou. OMFG THE SHINTENNOU AND ENDYMION/MAMORU, THEIR BOND IS SO AWESOME AND TRAGIC AND YET KIND OF BADASS. *fountains manry tears* I just, I kind of love them because of this, as a group and individually. The glance-back of recognition between Mamoru and Nephrite and the constant bickering brainwashed!Endymion and Kunzite had in the anime made me catch my breath and think really hard. They are to him what the guardian senshi are to Usagi, and the only way he gets to keep them is as a stone collection. That's so unfair.
* I'm going to refrain from answering this one because Sailor Moon fandom is fractious and factionalized, so one group's unpopular opinion is another group's Holy Writ, and I can't be bothered to keep track of them all.
* I wish he'd had more chance to be awesome. In the manga and the anime he was the Main Character's Fated Love Interest, so he had to be less powerful and got killed or sent away or brainwashed by Beryl or given amnesia again to get him out of the way for some plots, and those latter two actually got him more screentime than otherwise. PGSM actually gives Mamoru (and the other senshi) more time in the spotlight, to develop and relate to the people around them, than do the other two formats. So that was kind of nice, actually. But in the manga and the anime, he got blanderized and pushed to one side, and his daughter from the future had the hots for him which was HELLA CREEPY, so I wish that hadn't happened.
Re: THIS IS TOTALLY INCOHERENT (and contradicts itself in places)
Date: 2011-10-03 01:56 pm (UTC)Manga!Mamoru is and always will be my favorite version -- and yeh, much like Tamahome he basically gets gutted in the anime version in order to be made into the Bishonen Boyfriend, which is damned annoying.
He doesn't come out of things quite so badly in the manga (as opposed to the anime) as you think, though. He gets shipped off for the Stars arc but otherwise has a decent showing for the Supporting Male Character [tm]; remember, the manga is where we get all the stuff about the Golden Crystal and Elysion and all, and where there's some cute scenes in the Black Moon arc (I think it's the Black Moon arc) with the youngster at school who idolizes him and sees him heal himself. I know there's other bits but my recollection is kind of blegh atm ~
I'm cool with the Beryl brainwashing in the manga, because that was kind of the whole point of what started the whole mess ;3~

Date: 2011-10-03 01:58 pm (UTC)Utena
Date: 2011-10-03 02:28 pm (UTC)In all honestly, I liked her, thought she was funny and suppoted her for challenging gender stereotypes, and then she basically becomes a cardboard cutout hero for a while, no longer the focus of her own series. She was like the mecha being piloted for the fight scenes and that's kind of it.
Quoting forever movie!Utena's "IT WAS YOU, WASN'T IT?!" though.
* Ugh. None, really? Maybe Dios, but it's more wanting to become him than wanting a romance with him.
* Well, Wakaba.
* Alas that my many unpopular opinions about this series are not really directly about Utena herself.
* Heh. I wish she'd killed Anthy and saved the Prince.
Feldt
Date: 2011-10-03 02:35 pm (UTC)* CERTAINLY NOT SETSUNA. Ugh, where did that even come from --
Clearly she had a little crush on Neil, but I don't think it was reciprocated. I don't ship her.
* CHRIIIIIIIIIIIS. ;o;
* I have no idea what opinions about her there are out there, so I refrain from answering in this in ignorance.
* OMG, first of all I would like her to have punched Lyle, if he had to exist. She should have become a Gundam pilot! And we could have gotten either scenes in the various non-animated materials showing how when her parents died CHELL and/or THE VASHTIS raised her, or an appearance by Chell in Season 2 referencing Feldt's awesome parents. SHE COULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME, GOD DAMN IT!
Graham
Date: 2011-10-03 02:39 pm (UTC)* ...Let's not even go there.
* He clearly bonds well with those under his command, sometimes. You could probably name them better than I could. He's not a bad commander, when he's in his right mind.
* Hm. See above?
* I wish he had never become Mr. Bushido. If he could have regained his -- not sanity, but lucidity -- in Season 2 instead of it being wasted in the movie, that would have made me happy. But Season 2 has a lot to answer for.

Date: 2011-10-03 03:41 pm (UTC)*cough* Anyway...
* Mainly I felt bad for him at the end of the book. Pretty sure I cried.
* Nobody? Not enough info about his life pre-brainjacking.
* When not brainjacked, his loyalty to his leader, and probably working friendships/political rivalries with his fellow governors.
* There aren't enough of us in the fandom for there to be any popular or unpopular opnions.
* *sigh* I wish he'd been able to die, but I can see why he wasn't, and the country does need someone to put things back together.

Date: 2011-10-03 11:21 pm (UTC)* I will read Bones/Kirk and Bones/Spock and Bones/Chapel and, if I could find it, I would also read Bones/Natira. But I don't ship him with anyone.
* BONES/KIRK/SPOCK BROT3 4EVA. I enjoy his relationships with each of them seperately, and also his friendship with Scotty and his working friendship/mentorship with Chapel, and the way he admires Uhura and and -- look. The TOS crew are a family . (But BROT3 4EVA)
* The man's straight.
* ...I have nothing to add, really. I mean, there's stuff in some of the novels that are quasi-canon that say he lived long enough to see Scotty again. That's enough for me. He had a good run.
(no subject)
Date: 2011-10-03 11:33 pm (UTC)* James T. Kirk, but it's over and they do both know it. She'll always have a soft spot for him, but she won't let it compromise her principles (much) and he likes that about her. I like to believe they remained friends.
* I don't have one, but I tell you what: I bet she hated Gary Mitchell in the Academy and only grudgingly got along with him when they served together on Kirk's ship before the Enterprise.
* XD That I like her at all? That I even noticed her, adn found her interesting and sympathetic?
* Hm. Well, I suppose they could have given her a cameo when everyone was being charged with disobeying orders. Even put her in the crowd. I get a kick out of noticing stuff like that. I kinda wish she hadn't kissed him on the bridge, but I laugh a little wondering what those who saw it who didn't know they'd been an item made of Kirk getting a kiss from the lawyer who'd been prosecuting him. X3

Give me a little while to see how much I can seperate my headcanon from my impressions of the character as presented in the source material. I'll get back to you.

Deathmask
Date: 2011-10-08 09:24 pm (UTC)* I don't know why I like him so much. (I basically adopted all the "assassin" Gold Saints, for some reason.) I think maybe it was the laugh, or the fact that his face is SOOPAR EXPRESSIVE. And the way he's kinda sulky at Asian Goldies when he wanted to kill the Bronze Saints is funny. Ruinin' his fun.
I do actually love the guy. Sure, he's clearly insane, and he's a mass-murderer, but he realised the error of his ways -- too late. He lived believing "might makes right", which, being as he's a superpowered warrior-priest rightfully expecting to fight in a potentially-humanity-destroying holy war before he was thirty, and was furthermore no doubt driven crazy by his extremely creepy powers, is an understandable position for him to have taken. And then he died, adn went to hell. After having a window to it his entire adult life. And he came back to save Athena and humanity. And died again, poor bastard.
* Er, none. In my headcanon, Deathmask really goes more for friends-with-occasional-benefits, and random hook-ups. Less of those now that he's gotten some therapy and started drinking a whole lot less. I bet you can guess his two main fuckbuddies! That's right, Aphrodite and Shura. Nearly always at Aphrodite's insitigation.
Also, he hooked up with Shiryuu at a party once, I think.
Also also, he's attracted to Aiacos, but he's not planning to do anything about it until Aiacos has a chance to get over some clear issues of his own.
* In my view, Deathmask's best friends are: Aphrodite, and then slightly differently Shura. He also has a weird sort of neighbourly friendship with Mu, post-death headcanon-wise, and also is a regular chess opponent of Kiki's. Plus, he gets along pretty well with those Spectres who elected to join Sanctuary once they found themselves kicked out of Erebus while Kore does some spring cleaning.
* *pause for laughter* Ahhh... Views on him vary widely depending on what country or continent the fans are from. I think his redemption/redeemability?
* I couldn't venture to say. Saint Seiya has a lot of shitty things happen to all the charaters, but their dealing with these adversities, whether they survive or end up trapped forever in stone or what, is why the story is powerful. So, yes, I have roleplayed for years thing that happen to Deathmask in a few incarnations for many years, but the series... I don't know that I should change anything before the end of the Hades arc, really?

Date: 2011-10-10 09:43 pm (UTC)Which makes him REALLY INTERSTING to think and write about.
Plus I love making my own AUs of him, or slipping him into stories set in other universes.
* Shatterstar, basically. I can write about him crushing on a variety of people, including BoomBoom, Rahne, and Rusty, but the only one who I romantically "ship" him with is, really, Shatterstar.
* Sam. BoomBoom. Those are the big two. Berto. Prosh. Hank. I liked his friendships with all of them. Ooh! And Namor.
* Ahhh, hm. That they should have kept his name Rictor (first name) and made him be the son of Arclight (the Maurauder).
* Making him turn out to have been Arclight's son. They can still do this! We know nothing about his biological mother! Also, boy needs to shave. He put on some roundness in his face when he lost his powers, and the stubble just highlights that. And get a haircut! Or let it go curly again, or spike it, or something.
Re: Deathmask
Date: 2011-10-11 04:17 am (UTC)I can't say I ever really thought of Shura as anybody's fuckbuddy. He always seemed a bit too...single-minded for such things, to me. But then the Goldies are a confusing lot with a lot of blanks to fill in. The only people I ever outright disagreed with were the people who tried to say Aphrodite was a weak woobie. Weaklings do not become Gold Saints, and despite his weapon of choice the man was a pretty brutal assassin. Not a lot of woobie.
...sorry, tangent. Anyway, I love hearing people's opinions on the Goldies. They are so wildly different thanks to the lack of information from Kuramada, but always interesting nonetheless. Thanks for giving your opinion on DM. \(^-^)/

Trickster pt1
Date: 2011-10-22 10:38 pm (UTC)I have to admit, until he went up against Neron the first time, I saw James Jesse as mostly a prankster and con-artist; he only became interesting to me when he started living up to the name Trickster. But, looking back over the old stories with that perspective in mind, it was always there in potential -- it depended on who was writing him. Hell, sometimes the same writer would have him be an goofball controlled by his compulsions one issue, a good guy with a zany sense of fun the next, and a canny manipulator with a near-instantaneous ability to divine how best to take advantage of the quirks of someone's psyche for both his own gain and that of the nearest costumed hero in the one after that. I point you to his appearences in Blue Devil for every example I had in mind writing that sentence, and a real rollercoaster in terms of James' portrayal.
I like him best when he means well but that fact isn't obvious until you look back -- the con-artist for good. Like Percy Blakeney! X3 And he really is brilliantly inventive to boot, much more versitile than most of the Rogues. (But I think Hartley is actually smarter.) But Trickster knows things. Inevitably more than you think he does.
* Hm. Hmmm. Difficult to say. I think even the relationships we see him have or want or reference having had are more friends-with-benefits. He can be romantic, but the problem is that you never know if you're dealing with the real James Jesse, or Giovanni Giuseppe, or what.
* I love his partnership with Piper. It's rocky at times, and James is probably of three minds over the fact that Hartley's best friends are really Wally and Linda, not him... mostly. I also liked his interaction with Selina Kyle. I like that when his old girlfriend Mindy Hong called him for help, he not only came a-runnin', he got a bunch of the Rogues in on it (although Piper was probably the only volunteer). I think he learned something important from Bart Allen, and I enjoyed his interaction with White Lightning and her Momma. I... am actually not too fond of his relationship with Blue Devil, mostly because of how inconsistant it is; sometimes Danny's a real jerkwad to James, and vice versa.
I love his enternal enmity to Neron. }3
* No comment.

Trickster pt2
Date: 2011-10-22 10:38 pm (UTC)I hated the whole way Rogues War went down. I actually thought James joining the FBI had a lot of potential, and gathering a team of reformed Rogues to help him put the kibosh on the escalatingly bad Rogues could have been cool, but it went very badly. The Top brainwashed them into reforming? Seriously, DC, that's what you went with? After the years of character development that went into Mick's struggle to not only join the side of the angels and stay there but also to be accepted? The decades of Hartley as hero? All that therapy Frankie had after her powers and the rejection they brought her from her mother drove her nuts the first time? I swear to God, that whole company-wide repeating theme of "bad people can only become good people if their minds are altered by an outside force, and it never lasts" is not a message I think belongs in superhero comics. Superman's unquashable tragic hope that Luthor might come to his senses and be the boon to humanity they both know he could be (even as he accepts that it doesn't seem like it will happen) means nothing in a universe like that. *bitter* "You cannot do right once you do wrong" is not something that kids or adults of any age need shoved down their throats; it's an evil message of hopelessness in a world where mercy and forgiveness are sorely needed. It destroyed the universe. I wish it hadn't. *deep breath* I also could have done without the gay jokes -- like Piper, I never found them funny, and also they weren't in his character at any point before. But taking the bullets for his friend -- that's James. (Even if they were suspiciously dead-on-target killshots on the corpse for someone who jumped into the line of fire from an angle.) And saying "Not him -- not now!" like he knew Hartley was the key to stopping DeSaad and Brother Eye -- but it never being confirmed -- that works, too. And leaving Hartley everything, and the invisible ink on the Will -- that's very very James.
But I wish he'd come back.
