Finding Spanish-language lyrics for this took the better part of an hour! :o There is a mind-boggling amount of scholarly discussion on the internet about this musical and this character, in all kinds of languages.

Sadly, I can't read the Spanish at all, but I am very interested in the differences between the French and English versions. There's some interesting phrasing in there!

Do you know if Javert's Suicide was one of the ones kept untouched from the French original, or was it revised and reinterpreted after the English version was written?

I like the "black and white" theme, and the "I should have died like a soldier" versus "it was my right to die as well". Ice instead of stone... The sentiment is basically the same, but as you say, some interesting phrasing~

Alas, I have no idea. I was not even aware that the musical was originally written in French.

The concept album was in French, yes -- the finalized version of the play was in English, however. If you ever get a chance to listen to the concept, it's all very 80s; rock-and-roll, almost. I'm glad they did away with that over-riding 80s vibe, because I fear it would have otherwise negatively dated the rest of the musical.

Some of the black-and-white imagery is still present in the English version -- "He knows his way in the dark, but mine is the way of the Lord," but it's not as outright, no.

Huh, now I think I should go listen to a current French version. :3

I love 80s rock and therefore want to hear this concept album. (o_o)

True, but that's not reall the same as,
Black or white, outside the law or within
Black or white, it's Javert or Valjean
-- and it works for Javert having a "black or white" view of the world, which Valjean has just severely disrupted. I wonder if it's sung with as much vicious desperation as the English,
There is nothing on Earth that we share!
It is either Valjean or Javert!
