The concept album was in French, yes -- the finalized version of the play was in English, however. If you ever get a chance to listen to the concept, it's all very 80s; rock-and-roll, almost. I'm glad they did away with that over-riding 80s vibe, because I fear it would have otherwise negatively dated the rest of the musical.

Some of the black-and-white imagery is still present in the English version -- "He knows his way in the dark, but mine is the way of the Lord," but it's not as outright, no.

Huh, now I think I should go listen to a current French version. :3

I love 80s rock and therefore want to hear this concept album. (o_o)

True, but that's not reall the same as,
Black or white, outside the law or within
Black or white, it's Javert or Valjean
-- and it works for Javert having a "black or white" view of the world, which Valjean has just severely disrupted. I wonder if it's sung with as much vicious desperation as the English,
There is nothing on Earth that we share!
It is either Valjean or Javert!
