Title: Runaway Train
Summary: Bobby's thoughts from a particular moment in X-Factor #17 vol.1.
Rating: Gen

If Bobby Drake's life were a train, right now it was going full speed down a track called Misfortune, with no one in the engine car. He certainly wasn't in control.

It was amazing how things could take a turn. Getting Jean back -- that had been such a happy moment. The whole gang together again, and proof that Jeannie hadn't turned to the dark side. It wasn't perfect, but it was better, much better than being a tiny cog in a big company and pretending he hadn't just lost a whole bunch of friends. And this X-Factor thing had started good, too. It wasn't a flawless idea, but they were a team again, and that was what was important.

The superhero gig always had its ups and downs, but it felt like more ups -- like they were getting away with doing good with none the wiser. That was alright, too. Being legit for a while had been nice, but they were all used to the secret outlaw mutant life.

Then the Morlocks had been massacred. That had really been the first wrong turn in this leg of the train ride. They saved who they could, but it wasn't many in the grand scheme of things -- and it just wasn't fair. The Morlocks didn't deserve this kind of attention, but they'd gotten it, anyway.

That Warren had disappeared just doubled the blow, leaving them strung taut with worry. That he was alive brought a moment of relief, one flash of sunlight before the dark clouds of irreparable injury and insidious infection rolled in. His beautiful wings--! Even blinded, Warren had taken to the sky. To never fly again -- no wonder he said he'd rather die than lose them. Bobby could only imagine.

It was still hanging over their heads when Bobby was abducted by Loki. He cursed the timing of it. No sooner had he said that he needed some time alone to think than he'd found himself elsewhere, in the clutches of a mad and malicious god. He didn't know what Loki's device really did to him, and he sure didn't trust anything that big jerk said, but it had felt like it was sucking the cold out of him, making him use his powers. Now he couldn't seem to get control back. He hoped it was just because he was so exhausted. He hoped Hank could help him figure it out, like he'd told Thor after the Avenger rescued him.

Thor had dropped him off at X-Factor's HQ, and Bobby had barely touched foot to roof when he'd been told that Warren was dead. Warren's wings had been amputated, so he'd killed himself.

He hadn't believed it. Who could believe that? He'd thought that maybe he was still captive of the god of lies, but it was slowly becoming more real. Not a hundred percent, not with no body recovered from the explosion, but they were all in black, in a car, heading to the church. He looked at the grieving faces around him, let Hank hunch close as he could and tried not to be cold...

He couldn't help but think that it could never be the same, now. They'd gotten Jean back but lost Warren.

If Bobby's life were a runaway train, he was pretty sure it had just entered a dark tunnel with no light visible ahead.
