eliyes: (let me get this straight)
So I just finished reading The Janus Gate trilogy by L.A. Graf, and it has some of the most wildly inaccurate back cover blurbs I have ever seen on a Star Trek novel, and that's REALLY SAYING SOMETHING.

So I'm gonna talk about it! (Under the cuts, this post is huge.)

Book 1: Present Tense )

It was a helluva cliff-hanger ending, I actually went DUN DUN DUNNNN so loud I hurt my throat. Moving on --

Boot 2: Future Imperfect )

There's one weirdly, probably unintentionally flirty line from young!Sulu in this book that may cause some readers to activate their slashgoggles. Also, Spock's reaction to the kid offering to shake hands is great.

Book 3: Past Prologue )

So, despite all this bitching, it's just the blurbs I'm irritated with: the books are really good. Being L.A. Graf books, they are especially good if you like Kirk being awesome and Sulu, Uhura and Chekov being not only individually awesome, but also the greatest of friends.

These books are also great if you like seeing more of canonical minor or background characters among the crew, including ones that were maybe spotlighted in an episode. I think that all the people we saw were canonical, but Memory Alpha's search function is apparently fuxxored, so I can't confirm that at this time.

TL;DR I RECOMMEND THIS TRILOGY BUT IGNORE THE JACKET BLURBS.

First, some belated Christmas fic. Really, I read too much around Christmas to be able to rec it, so my happening over some at this late date means at least something gets passed along.

John and Rodney Save Christmas ...after imperiling it in the first place, of course, as is their usual M.O. PG-13 and John/Rodney. Giggle-worthy.

Next up -- well, this requires a little explanation. There's a genre in SGA fic known as 'aliens made them do it'. I'm not terribly fond of it, actually. I much prefer the rarer variation, 'aliens totally think they're doing it'. Here are two examples of a subset of that, Accidental Marriage According to Alien Custom. ^_^ I realise letting you know that is a bit spoilery for the fics, but it's watching it happen that's the most fun.

Toss of a Coin

Shotgun Wedding

Also, Mamoru has made a new vid! I love Mamoru's vids. I wish to hell I could remember my imeem password so I could favourite this and comment and stuff. The Choice is an AU vid. :D 'An AU Version of John Sheppard living in the land of meditation and peace until he meets someone whose main mode is disruption :)' <3

Finally, a trio of fics centering around the events of Rising Part 1. Jack/Daniel, but John's an important factor, and Rodney makes an appearance as well. My only quibble with these is that afaik Elizabeth was in charge of the researchers working in Antarctica, not Daniel. This is the only time period that John the Human Light-Switch works for me. ;3

I Don't Know Him
I Don't Care
I Don't Have A Clue

Sometimes, when two ficcers love each other very much, one writes an awesome fic and the other writes an awesome sequel and they are both totally okay with this. This was the case in the following two surreal and wonderful stories: Logopetria and Eloquence.

Today I made a start on putting together a master list of my fanfics.

*hysterical laughter*

Yeah. That's not happening. I am not nearly OCD enough to manage it, and it's not even that I have a lot, it's just that they're everywhere.

(eta: May 27, 2011 -- Going back through my journal, the above amuses me, since I did actually make my masterlist some time ago... X3)

So instead, have some fanfic recs! Today's flavour is AUs, because... I kinda love them. SGA, dS and TS represented.
