I'm not kidding with that subject line, I really did just now take an online test that's supposed to try to place you on the Kinsey scale and I got this result:

"F - The test failed to match you to a Kinsey Type profile. Either you answered some questions wrong, or you are a very unusual person."

The test does include the X for asexual/non-sexual that was in the original Kinsey scales, so good on them for that, but... seriously? The questions are all True/False and none of them are weird, so I am not really sure how I got this result. X3 I borked it!

Personally, I place myself as like a 3.0-3.7 on the scale, i.e. bisexual but liking women a bit better (or more accurately for me, attracted to a wider range of women than men). Decimals!

Oh! Hadn't seen anyone get the "F" on it. Didn't know that was possible. . .weird. I had a friend who signed up for a dating website which required you to fill out a survey. Once he was done and submitted it, it apologized and said they wouldn't be able to find him a match because of his answers being too unique or different.

I got a 3 on the test!

This does not make me feel better. X3 Apparnetly "weird" is the answer.

Aw, your friend. :(

3 is what I would have predicted for you. Actually I thought of you with the sex and gender questions, just because they used male/female for sex and man/woman for gender, and you do that.

Huh. Depending on how I answer the one question that I really don't know the answer to, I get a 3 or an X. Which... makes sense, honestly, since I typically identify as either bisexual or biromantic asexual.

So that one question represents the fulcrum on which you can tip between the two?

Pretty much, yeah. (It's the "I have no interest in sexual intercourse with anyone." one. Which... sometimes I really don't, and other times I can at least see it as a possibility even if nothing comes of it. So, yeah.)

Yeah, I can see where that'd be the tipping point re: asexuality.

I personally think of it as the Kinsey Sliding Scale, because people's tastes or self-acceptance or interest in experimenting beyond what they know change over time.

I got an F also, which... I'm pretty much het, though I'd be open to interacting with another woman, if I felt attracted. So my answers (I thought) would show that.

And how the hell can they say we answered the questions "wrong"? Sounds like the test sets up expectations for the answers, which is so not kosher.

I figure I'm pretty straightforward, really, pardon the non-pun. I am not sure why the test is confused. X3

Yeah, I didn't like it saying I answered wrong. Missed a question, I could see. (Although I did not.) But "wrong" was a poor word choice.

I was just about to take it but the third question is about a deal-breaker for me.

Spose I'll pick something and try anyway --

The third question total, or the third True/False question?

The third question total.

Not that the third T/F isn't also a fool's game, since it only gives you a specific option to decry (depending on your selection in the third question total) and one never goes back to say as much about any other possible options.

They're doing that binary thing. -_- They should add "other" and "non-applicable" as options for a lot of these questions...

If they did it wouldn't be the original Kinsey setup. Which says a good deal about said setup, really.

Mind you, taking the test (and rolling my eyes) I still come out as X. And no one was surprised.

However, I take issue with the last question also and severely question why it is even relevant -- I suspect some deep gender-and-sexuality behavioural stereotyping at work.

(to say nothing of how in the seven shining hells is someone who is utterly uninterested supposed to even answer the goddamn question?)

Nope, not surprised.

Yeah, I don't understand why the last question would be relevent. I sort of wonder if this is a rehash of the actual questionnaires Kinsey used or something. It's not like the page says.

("False"? You're not sexually anything.)

Heh.

It's relevant if you believe the shite about dominant = masculine/male and submissive = feminine/female and just keep following that line of thought to the usual sexuality stereotypes.

(it's a "have you stopped beating your wife today" question. I chose false, because I'm not, but the question is geared such that if you're female and not sexually submissive than perforce and unspoken you're sexually dominant.)
