1. Rictor/Shatterstar (comicsverse, now)
It was October 11th, and BoomBoom was visiting X-Factor Investigations. The former X-Force members of the team had taken her out to lunch, and now they were walking through the city.
And she was poking Ric in the ribs.
"Quit it!"
"Did you know it's National Coming Out Day?" She'd been full of evil glee since she found out about him and Shatterstar.
"I'm already out!" Ric exclaimed, exasperated.
"Then how come I just found out?"
"Because when I tried to tell you before, you hit on 'Star and made a homophobic joke."
This sparked their fifth or sixth argument of the day. Terry rolled her eyes and nudged Shatterstar with her elbow. He scanned the busy plaza they were crossing, then dragged Ric over and up onto a nearby bench.
"'Star, what --"
"Attention, citizens!"
"Wait, what --"
"This is my boyfriend!" And Shatterstar leaned in and kissed Rictor thoroughly.
"Happy National Coming Out Day!" Terry called and threw rainbow glitter on them. BoomBoom helped.
2. Bucky!Cap
Sam had warned him, but Bucky hadn't really been prepared for the reality.
As he watched the police take away the costumed criminals he'd just thwarted, a young man in civvies stepped out of the crowd and stepped towards him.
"Um... Captain America?" He was radiating nervousness, so Bucky made his tone encouraging when he turned and said, "Yes?"
"I-I-I'm gay."
"Steve would always smile at them," Sam had said when he explained what Captain America should expect on October 11th, "And tell them he was proud of them for being true to themselves, or something along those lines."
And now Bucky was Captain America.
He grinned -- he couldn't help it, they were accepting him as Cap with this -- and clapped the guy lightly on the shoulder.
"I'm proud of you for coming out."
3. Flash family
"What does Coming Out mean?" Bart asked, nearly causing Wally to snort coffee out his nose.
Wally coughed, and waved a hand at the other adults in the room, ceding the floor to them.
"You wanna field this one, Piper?" Linda asked drily, but Iris waved her pen.
"I've got it. Bart, you know what romance is?"
"Mushy kissing and stuff," he answered, wrinkling his nose.
"Right. People who are biologically inclined to do the mushy kissing and stuff with people who are the same sex as themselves are, in this time, called 'gay' or 'homosexual'. 'Coming out' is when a gay person tells people that they are gay."
"Why do they have to tell them?"
"So that they stop trying to encourage them to have romantic relationships with people the wrong sex for them. Also, in this time period, there are a lot of people who think being gay is unnatural or wrong. It's not. It's illegal in some places, but it's not a law you need to worry about enforcing."
Bart scratched his head. "That's stupid."
"Yes, it is, and no one will think that way by the time you're born."
"Really?" Piper asked, looking up from where he was repairing the communication ear pieces from Wally's costume.
Iris smiled over her coffee mug. "That's one piece of information about the future I have no problem sharing."
