So, after my last post, I went scouring YouTube for Utena fanvids. There are way more than I check tonight, however, so I will be updating this post another night. Or two.

Things I have learned:
1. Most fanvids are Utena/Anshi.
2. Most fanvids start with either the flickering lamp from the movie or Anshi at the piano.
2.b Either of these is 50% likely to segue to the water droplet hitting ring as the rose gate opens.
3. Utena/Anshi vids are, by and large, depressing, and very very pro-Anshi.
4. Utena fanvids, especially if they are Utena/Anshi biased, favour a particular set of clips. In fact, I think some of the vidders are ripping each others edits off.
EXAMPLE: this and this? Exact same edits. Seriously, I lined up the windows and watched them side by side with the sound off. Exactly the same. Fancy that.

This is straight up just the dance scene from the movie. No subtitles or anything. included here for prettiness, alas it does not include the ax. (I figured I should mark it, in case I wear out the tape. :3)

This is a pretty awesome, SPOILERIFFIC vid using footage from the most important i.e. second weirdest moments of the series AND the movie. Touga. *drools* Dioszilla! Both Utena Cars! Castle car! Drugged water! Stabbitty! Prince goes clunk! Fast-paced. Music by My Chemical Romance. I wonder if they picked it because it includes the phrase "Ends of the World"? :D No, no the lyrics are too relevant for that. The song is "The Ghost of You". The vid itself is ultimately Anshi/Utena (note order there...) but it's also pretty good and has some very pretty Utena/Touga in the beginning and some violets in the middle which, as always, managed to disturb me.

EDIT! :D

Foolishness! XD Akio, I can see right down your pants! Okay. I'm guessing this was something you were treated to in the game. There are game characters, there's recognizable game footage, and there's cast members singing some of the previously instrumental songs from the show. It is funny. You should watch it. AKIO-TOUGA-KYOUICHI BOY BAND OMG! XD

And then you should watch this! It is the Particle Dance video! omgomgomg This thing is cool. Using footage from the show and the game, we get this and it is awesome! Wonder how Saionji Kyouichi wound up the Champion? Want to see duels that don't involve Utena? WATCH THIS. IT IS LOVELY.

Speaking of lovely, we're back to the movie with this, wherein I spotted only one bit of footage from the show, and they were sneaky about it. It uses most of the best footage from the movie, and the editing is just dazzling. The song is "Castles In the Sky". It's techno-y, and so there are strobe effects (Warning: this video may not be epileptic-friendly) which are really well done. There is superimposing done very, very well. SO AWESOME.

Aaaaand movie again (I can't help it if the vidders want to use the pretty! ^^; ) I adore the Utena movie. I really like the song Sanctuary by Utada Hikaru at the beginning of KH2. So why does this melding of the two not make me scream for joy? Might have something to do with the relentless repetition of the same imagery over and over and over and over. With only a combined total of 2.3 seconds of Touga. Though lots of Kyouichi. Yay, Kyouichi! *waves tiny flag* Flagrantly Utena/Anshi. Watch at risk.

OH HEY LOOK a video blatently ripping off footage from the already very much obviously edited "Hit Me Baby One More Time" fanvid above. Fancy that. *rolls eyes*

Getting tired of all the Utena/Anshi. Mind blown by concept of Utena video done to a 50 Cent song.

...

HAVE SOME AKIO/TOUGA!!! Annnnd dubbed. AWESOMELY dubbed to sing the music. My mind is blown a bit by the girly voice coming out of Touga's mouth. Watch for the little hands pointing out the phallic objects and whatnot. Bwahahaha! There's even an intermission!

Oh, have another one! XD

Okay, okay, to be fair, you can ship Touga with most of the rest of the cast. Not usually convincingly, mind, but... yeah. He's "been around the block so many times he knows the only parking space that's free", as this song puts it. Triple thumbs up for the rarely-used footage of Kyouichi standing on the bike like Touga does in many of the vids above. The key difference being that Kyou? Wears a helmet. Shmot Boy.
P.S. The song is by the Barenaked Ladies. C'mon, that alone is a great reason to watch it!

Tired of boys, back the lesbians! This is probably meant to be Utena/Anthy, but mostly to me it seems to be very Utena. Just... Utena. She's the hero. This kinda brings that back. Using footage from show, movie, and game. Massive spoiler warning, but it's pretty. I think they really missed a chance to used the cabbage butterfly (moth?) imagery for this one, though.

Watching the series, I suprised myself by really coming to like the character of Kiryuu Nanami, Touga's younger sister. Heaven knows she's no angel, but there's just something about her... This video really appeals to me.

That's all for now. :3

*sighs at the abundance of Anshi and Utena*

Welcome to why I step softly in Ohtori fandom ... and carry a daiklave instead of a stick.

Same reason as me: the evidence against Anshi being remotely how most of the fans see her.

Sometimes I (briefly) wonder if we've managed to delude ourselves somehow ... and then I review the source material, and I know we're not the insane ones.

Of course, a good number of these other people may be working from the manga -- or even the movie, where events are more obscure than anything else.

But in the series itself, Anshi is hell incarnate as far as I'm concerned -_-

I never would have thought, at the beginning, that i would end up cheering everytime the pod slaps her one.

I wasn't bothered at all even from the first time I saw it; but I think it's because even when she's acting non-demonspawn Anshi is the kind of character I utterly loathe anyway. So seeing her get whalloped was kind of nice.

Poor pod. I didn't like him at first. Until I was enlightened to his awesomeness. *pets him*

That beginning arc is just so damned misleading, isn't it?

Well, it is supposed to be. And yeh, a bit. Although right around the point of "exchange diary" I was all "awww...you're weird and crazy and a little pathetic! I think I might be starting to like you."

The wonderful irony of the first arc for me is that if I hadn't paid attention to the end of it and events immeidately afterwards -- and done some research -- I probably would have continued watching but without much interest in the characters (and then been surprised as hell).

I was more keen on the metaphysics than anything else at that point *snerks*
