Author's notes: This was originally going to be Chapter One of a longer story which it turns out I can't actually write, because the plot required a character (not seen here) to behave in a way which I'm no longer see as in character. "Sexual Panic" was originally just the chapter header, and is a phrase directly borrowed from Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books, because Miles uses it to describe the way he just goes on "look at me I am awesome/God, I'm such a loser" overdrive when he meets someone he's attracted to. (This tends to lead to him acquiring überloyal mercenary fleets, etc.) That's... sort of what happens here. ;3

Title: Sexual Panic
Fandom: Star Trek TOS (pre-series)
References: Episode "Court Martial"
Summary: Cadet Areel Shaw is hot for teacher (in the person of Lt.(j.g.) Kirk).

"Excuse me, may I sit with you?"

Areel Shaw, Starfleet cadet, looked up from her textbook with something akin to shock. This can't be happening, she thought, but there were the Lieutenant's stripes on his sleeve, the broad shoulders, the handsome face she usually only saw from a distance.

"Um, yes, sure. I mean, yes, sir."

James T. Kirk smiled -- at her! -- in a friendly way, then set his tray and a stack of datareaders on the table. She'd never been close enough before to discover that his eyes were almost the same shade of golden-brown as his hair. And so were his eyelashes.

Terrified of being caught staring, Areel dropped her gaze to Kirk's lunch, cataloging it automatically: roast beef sandwich with spinach, side of potato salad, coffee, pear. She compared this to the pasta salad she was eating and silently went into a panic about her doubtlessly offensive garlic breath. Oh, God, why did he choose to sit with her today?! Or at all, although it wasn't uncommon for instructors to dine with cadets, especially the junior officers. But she hadn't noticed him in here before, so why now? Why her?

"I'd like to ask you a question, Shaw," Kirk said, and for a moment she feared she'd said some of that out loud -- oh, please, no. Fortunately, instinct kicked in, and she straightened in her seat.

"Yes, sir?" She did her best to project attentiveness, which her mother said made her look like a spaniel and she was not thinking about that now.

"I was looking at your transcripts --" Here he gave her a small smile of apology for the intrusion, even though it was his right to do so as her instructor; she rather desperately wished she knew why he'd been doing it, though. "-- and I notice a trend. Tell me, do you have a particular career path in mind?"

"Yes, sir," Areel said nervously. Kirk took a bite of his sandwich, watching her face expectantly, so she continued: "I want to work as an attorney with the Judge Advocate's office."

Kirk nodded as though she had confirmed something he'd suspected. Areel watched him take a sip of his coffee, noting that he pursed his lips when he swallowed, which was really kind of adorable --

"In that case, I'd like to make a suggestion," Kirk said seriously.

Little warning bells went off in Areel's mind. Please, please let him not be about to discourage me, she thought. The Federation counted on Starfleet for a number of things, including the enforcement of Federation law. Areel was passionate that the peacekeepers must be lawful and just internally to impose order externally. If Kirk were about to join the ranks of people who didn't think she could handle it, she would have to hate him.

I don't want to hate him; I really, really like him!

"I think you should join the debate club," he told her.

"The... debate club?" It was so completely not what she'd been expecting that Areel felt a little dizzy. Or maybe she'd been holding her breath.

"Yes, the debate club!" Kirk shifted in his seat, crossing his legs and incidentally turning to face her. "Look, Shaw, the assignments you've done for me are always well-researched and persuasively written, but you hardly ever speak up in class!"

I can't! Areel thought at him. I have this massive crush on you that makes me tongue-tied!

Kirk had been picking up half of his sandwich, but when she failed to respond he set it back down and gave her a considering look.

"An attorney has to be able to argue a case, right?"

She nodded.

"Against another lawyer -- and the one with the best argument wins. I know I'm simplifying."

"Well, the facts of the case play the largest role --"

"Ah, but you must be able to present them in a way that logically leads to the decision you're arguing for, isn't that right?"

"Yes, sir."

"The debate club would be good practice for that, Shaw."

"I -- I suppose it would." Maybe she'd learn how to talk sensibly in the presence of really attractive men.

And then James T. Kirk smiled at her again, his eyes warm with good humour, and Areel's heart skipped a beat. It would probably take more than a debate club to conquer that smile.

"You're not convinced," he observed.

"Well --" Areel began, then realised she had no idea how to respond. "Are you in the debate club?" she asked, then cringed internally at how obvious she'd just made her silly schoolgirl crush.

"Technically I am, although, as an instructor, I rarely get to debate. It's really for the cadets."

Areel hit upon an idea.

"Alright, lieutenant, show me the skills you developed -- present your argument."

Kirk's smile widened enough to show a hint of teeth.

I found a fandom in common! :D

I enjoyed this. You have a lovely way with words and I can absolutely see this scene playing out, it's so well drawn.

Wow, even the other Trekkies that have me friended seemed uninterested in reading about Areel Shaw. XD (I can't help it, I loved that episode!) Thank you for leaving a comment on this~

And thank you for the praise, as well. This scene wouldn't leave me alone, and while I wish it wasn't orphened from its original never-to-be-posted parent fic, I think it stands well on its own.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't remember the episode. (And will now have to go look it up!) I remember TOS more by osmosis (watching with my parents after supper). I was reading through your fics in a fandom I was at least familiar with, and I really liked it for the "hey, I can relate" reason. Not to mention, I like your style of writing.

So, yeah, I'd say it stands well on it's own. :)

Course now I'll just have to take a peek at was else you have to offer--without fandom familiarity, even!

If I go back through my lj, I can find at least 4 posts that mention the episode ("Court Martial") not including this one. And not one of them is a serious review, either -- just me goobering over Kirk being a BAMF, or soemthing weird Areel said, or Spock and Bones' eyeshadow. (Court appropriate eyeshadow for men in blue tunics = dark and smokey, but very neat, and not extending past the eyebrow.)

I'm glad you like my style! I therefore must warn you that some of the fic listed on my fic-index post are not in my usual style. I experiment sometimes.

I'm almost tempted to give you a list of the stories I personally like best, but not knowing your particular tastes, I should probably just let you poke around.

Who needs non-goobering reviews, srsly? ;)

I enjoy your style, but experimenting is good, too! What I like is that you aren't generic. You use interesting word choices, descriptions of things/people and are fun with bantering/dialogue.

A list of stories that you personally like best would be great, but I don't want to be a headache! My tastes vary and I'm open to just about anything--though I tend toward sweet, funny, romantic and such. If it's really dark, I'll skip over it most times. I've poked around some, but haven't commented on everything I've read because, well, I would be spamming your journal!

Thank you! #^_^#

Well, like pretty much every other fanficcer on the net, I love getting feedback. (As long as the feedback is not a demand that I lengthen the fic or "improve" it by adding a sex scene or something. That generally irritates me.) So spam away! But on the other hand, I am also a fanfic reader, and know that sometimes, even if you like a fic, you just have nothing to say about it, so don't feel pressured. XD

As for fics by me that are on the sweet, romantic, and funny side:

Bobby/Jean-Paul (all of these are "getting together" stories)
Secret Santa (http://speedsicle.livejournal.com/72676.html)
To Challenge the Stars (http://speedsicle.livejournal.com/91933.html)
Stop Me If You've Heard This One (http://eliyes.livejournal.com/206405.html)

Bobby & Warren (friends)
Nothing Owing (http://eliyes.livejournal.com/370348.html)

Yes, those were all technically the same Bobby... except in three different versions: one the main comics'verse, and two different cartoons... Two versions of Sam, as well.

Ted/Booster

John on the rest of the ensemble: friendships
Chemistry (http://eliyes.livejournal.com/196315.html)

This one is SGA, and it's not funny or sweet or romantic, but if you know the series, I hope you'll read it, since I think it's my strongest SGA fic. Acastus Kolya's opinion of John Sheppard: I Have Spat Out the Bile of Defeat (http://sga-flashfic.livejournal.com/635777.html)

SGC(&SGA) genderswap 'verse McKay/Carter

Leon & Daley (friends & police partners)
Two fic, one post! The Name Game, and, Motivations for Flirtation (http://eliyes.livejournal.com/95038.html)
Wild Horses (http://eliyes.livejournal.com/316341.html)
With This Ring (http://eliyes.livejournal.com/328998.html)

Drake & Josh (brothers)
In the Closet (http://drakexjosh.livejournal.com/115635.html)

Any of my Star Trek fic listed here (http://eliyes.livejournal.com/260988.html) under "Shotakari" or "Andorians", especially that latter. They're all OCs, which might not be your cup of tea. The Andorians stories are about a bondgroup, including how they met, and stuff after they are married, and also their friends and coworkers. They're usually funny, and sometimes sweet.

And if you really don't mind OCs, check out this little fic about one of the main characters from my Maniac Love universe: A Game of Cat and Mouse (http://eliyes.livejournal.com/314478.html). (Someday I will do the webcomic! Or something! Someday! *fistshake*)

Oh yeah, and another Bobby/Jean-Paul one -- which to my great surprise was recommended on a couple of fic-rec comms and described as WAFF -- Faux Pas (http://speedsicle.livejournal.com/68203.html).

Naturally, I don't expect you to read all of these, or to comment on most. But feel free to do so! XD

Feedback is definitely very nice. And, don't worry, I don't critique. That's annoying! I'd have a beta for that kind of thing. :D

OOOOOOOOOHHHHH! Nice list. Thank you for taking the time! I'll enjoy poking around in it. And I absolutely don't mind OC's. I basically write one myself.

I'll have to comment on a few others, cuz, well, I don't want you thinking I only read fics with "sexual" or "porn" in the title... lol.

I usually don't have a beta, so if you spot any egrerious typos, feel free to point them out to me so I can fix them! X3

It was no trouble! I basically knew what would be on it, I just had to feth the links, and since I keep a list of all my posted fic anyway, that didn't take too long. :D I hope you enjoy them!

Me either. All the typos and bad grammar are MINE, all mine, I say!

I'll enjoy them, yup. Thanks. :D
