When Kon returned to the table with his third helping of shipwreck dinner, he discovered Martha Kent smiling at him in a way he'd never seen her smile before.

"What?" he asked.

"Oh, nothing," she said, smile widening. "I was just thinking that my father would have liked you."

Caught taking a sip of milk, Jonathan Kent just barely managed not to choke on a snort of laughter. He wiped down his chin with his napkin, commenting, "I suppose he would have, at that."

Kon looked between the two, not sure whether to be complimented or... what.

"Why?" he asked warily.

Martha chuckled and reached across the table to pat his hand. "Nothing bad, Conner. It's just, he raised cattle, and he never quite forgave Clark for being a vegetarian." She winked. "Not that he didn't love him, but it'd do him proud to see you enjoying that ground beef."

"Oh," Kon said, looking down at his plate and feeling a spreading warmth across his cheeks -- and in his chest.
