You know a character intends to stick around when the first thing they do is make you write poetry.
She Left
One rainy night she left,
Stood on my stoop to say "Goodbye",
Gave no forwarding address.
I can't believe I didn't cry.
She said, "I want to roam,
And make all God's earth my home.
Maybe, someday, again...
You've... been a good friend."
After an awkward pause, I spoke.
I think I might have made a joke
While inside I cried "Don't go!"
She said, "Yeah." The joke fell flat.
She got in her truck and drove
Away from me, and that was that.

They'll run into each other again, but in the meanwtime.. when she left he realise how much he'd gotten "too involved" in his work.
