Hello, world.
Dec. 11th, 2005 10:07 amI LIVE!
Note to everyone who may be snail-mailing me things: for the time being, that's still the correct address. But my phone number is suspended fr the time being, and please email me at hotmail only, not my ISP account.
So. Some of you know - but most don't - that shortly before I joined livejournal, I suffered an apartment flood. Source: exploding water tank for the laundry room which was (against code) in our closet. It had been leaking for two weeks and they hadn't replaced it yet, and then at 5am I woke up to the Crazy Woman From Across The Hall pounding on my door and screaming, put my foot on the floor... an inch under water. Many electrocutions of water tank guys and a new floor later, we had lost... well, some stuff. Some really expensive out of print books from NASA, for example. But not a huge horrible amount.
We didn't have any warning this time.
Friday, while I was at work and my roommate was at an exam, a pipe burst two floors up from us. I have not gone to look at the units above us, but I have seen what the people who were immediately under the pipe have managed to salvage. Not much. I do know that the ceiling collapsed right over my roommate's futon. it's still slowly collapsing. There's a rather amusing big bubble of water(I hope)-filled paint on the living room wall, right over where the Gundam Wing Endless Waltz wallscroll hung.
I'm not going to dwell on what we lost. Quite a bit. Our beds. So many books... The cable modem had a scorch mark up the side when I got home, finally, after getting off work at 10pm. I am so glad that it apparently didn't effect the computer. I have to throw out more of what I saved, very likely.
The computers seemed fine when my roommate (She Whose Real Name Must Not Be Posted On the Net, but whose lj name is
taichara) turned them off. The ancient laptop I've dubbed Utnapishtim? Dry as a bone, thank God. We had our PDAs on us, so they are also fine. Even the presents I'd bought, including Mom's huuuge hardback, were unscathed. Much wasn't. We've thrown out a lot of stuff. All my story notebooks. My diary since 6th grade. *groan* Lots more. LOTS of comics. I just thank my lucky stars - and I know it's mean, guys, but I look back to last year and think "thank God it wasn't a fire". I'm sorry. *hugs*
So. We're currently stuffed into the empty and being-renovated (because the fucknard -- KENNY -- who lived there up until a couple months ago helpfully trashed the place. It's been repainted and such, but it's not done.) empty apartment down the hall. By this point today, the people from the third floor have probably gotten their stuff out, so we can expand into the bedroom. I've nails skirts up to cover the windows, which look either right onto the street or right into the kitchen window of the neighbouring house, depending on window. The can has been sleeping in the cabinet above the fridge. It's really cute, and I'd take pictures, but the cameras I bought were for taking pics of the damage.
We've moved nearly all of our salvageable furniture into a storage unit not far away (really nice one, too) and have a dehumidifier in with it and the big boxes of stuff we managed to get moved with the help of Tai's cousin the mover, one of his employees, and.. er.. Tai's-mother's-best-friend's-husband. And his truck, since the moving truck was unavailable due to the big snowstorm we had Friday night. My Uncle Ralph helped me move the stuff from our kitchen into this one, lent us the dehumidifier, and took soemthing like 10 big garbage bags full of sopping laundry to be washed. Tai's dad is ferrying down from Nfld with his massive truck.
That last is especially useful for moving more stuff into storage, and also, potentially, moving altogether. Just looking at today's paper there are a lot more places for rent this time of year than I'd expect. He also knows the city well, having gone to school here, too, so he can help us find some of these places. Tai is worried about breaking the lease and how that might effect getting the landlord to pay damages. We've got a lawyer who will be talking to the landlord's insurance company - soon as we find out what it is - and I look at it this way: our lease is a contract agreeing that we will pay such and such and behave such and such in return for the use of the apartment space. He can no longer keep up his end of the contract; we should be allowed to terminate the lease.
So, in other news... More bad: my uncle, mentioned above, is married. His wife's grandfather (77yo) was driving Friday night to my home town, and he got into a car crash with an 18-wheeler and broke his neck. He's still alive; my mother is a nurse at the neuro ICU and he's her patient. Bad night all round.
I think instead of doing a field school this summer to get the last few credits I need to graduate - and especially since Heather decided not to do a field school this year - I will instead take the classes next fall, and pay for them in installments as I work. Part-time studenthood! It will work better monetarily, especially as I can't get another loan until I finish my degree, and it gives me the added bonus option of taking one more half-credit Classics course and declaring it as a minor. Woot! Maybe I can take History of Greece! Also, it's a cushion to look to in case I failMedicine in Culture anything this year, and it should make getting a hold of JET easier... I think?
I guess that's all for now. I don't expect to have much access to computers this week; I don't work Monday, Tues and Wednes I'm at the Nat. His. Museum instead of here... Thursday I have an exam, so I might be able to log on at school. Wish me luck on my exam!

Weirdly, I'm the calm one this time. I think Tai's afraid of getting evicted more than anything, because it happened to her once before. Her dad's on the way, so that will help, and we can stay until we get a new apartment, I guess. *hugs* Thanks. I will no doubt be wanting to yak your ear off soon enough. How was the trip? Make sure you've got a story or two next time I see you! :D
