fanfiction leads to sheer bloody madness!
Feb. 9th, 2008 11:17 pmToday I made a start on putting together a master list of my fanfics.
*hysterical laughter*
Yeah. That's not happening. I am not nearly OCD enough to manage it, and it's not even that I have a lot, it's just that they're everywhere.
(eta: May 27, 2011 -- Going back through my journal, the above amuses me, since I did actually make my masterlist some time ago... X3)
So instead, have some fanfic recs! Today's flavour is AUs, because... I kinda love them. SGA, dS and TS represented.
Stargate: Atlantis
Fireball
This is a NASCAR AU. John/Rodney. I don't follow car racing at all, but this was a very enjoyable story. Even aside from the main dynamic, the rest of the characters really shine, and obviously are very intensely involved. I loved Ford in this. And there's a monkey!
String Theory, a Concerto for Violin in D Minor
John/Rodney. Rodney is a brilliant composer and John is the violinist he's determined to see fulfill his potential. There were some twists and turns in here I really didn't expect and so don't want to spoil for you, but the ending is just... radiant. Definitely a good read.
Lantis Cinemas and the Pegasus Cafe
John/Rodney. A lot of familiar faces, in their late teens and early twenties, working at a movie theatre and a café. The balloon animal fight is one of my favourite things. :3 Fluffy and gooby and funny.
The Road to Nevada
John/Rodney. (...sensing a theme? XD) It's like the SGA you know, except that it's between World Wars. And there's a circus in there somewhere. This story has some squicky moments for me -- there's a reason I don't ever read hooker AUs, and there's a little of that painted into John's past, in a way. But mostly I really like this story.
Long Road Home
If neither John nor Rodney had ended up in the Stargate program (probably); if Ronon and Teyla were illegal aliens; if Kavanaugh was a drug dealer in Texas -- it's all in here. This fic isn't really happy, but it's like comfort food in that it lays out hurts and promises you that things are in motion to help them heal, at least a little. It has some truly kick ass action scenes. I was cheering. It'd be an interesting movie.
Buffalo Wings
John/Rodney. Rodney is a bioengineer working in the field of advanced prosthetics. John is a pilot who regularly does patient air lifts. They meet at a coffee shop (where Ronon works) and things snowball from there. This one is kinda angsty, and commits the sins of evil!McKay and broken!Sheppard and wrapping up too fast, but it's so well-written in places that I keep getting lured back to it.
The Neighbourly Detective and the Tragic Woobie Widower
John/Rodney. This is one of those AUs that takes place in a universe where the Stargate stuff all exists but, for one reason or another, the characters are not involved in the same way. In fact Rodney has done some work for the SGC and gets certain video message from Zelenka at one point, and John very nearly accepted the posting in Antarctica instead of leaving the Air Force and becoming a cop. Three warnings on this one: A) there's a kid, and he's Rodney's; B) it's LONG -- this link is to part 1 of 23, but there's a link to the next bit at the bottom of each; C) It's completely addictive. The length intimidated me, but the first paragraph caught my eye, and then I pretty much forwent sleep in order to read it all.
The Last Hail Mary You'll Ever Need
John/Rodney. In this one, Rodney is with the Atlantis Expedition, but John started working for the SGC much earlier and wound up in the Pegasus Galaxy via... other means. My favourite parts involve Ronon, and also realistic timeframes for the end. An interesting read.
Tree Hugger
John/Rodney. John is a lumberjack (well, harvester operator), and Rodney is chained to a tree. This story has an interesting twist.
...I could go on, but I think I'll stop there for now. Onto other fandoms! (Of which I have much scantier bookmarks.)
due South
Pas de Deux (eta: seems to be gone D: )
Fraser/Kowalski. Fraser is still a Mountie in Chicago, the real Ray Vecchio is his partner, and Victoria Metcalf is the fiancée insisting he learn to dance. Ray Kowalski is a dance instructor. Sparks fly. Bullets, too. An interesting what if kind of tale.
Academic Punk (eta: also gone now D: )
Fraser/Kowalski. There are a surprising number of fics out there involving one or both of the boys being university profs. This is my favourite. Fraser is an emergency hire at U of Chicago, and stunned to find his stunning office-neighbour is none other than the brilliant and revered S.R. Kowalski.
Family Portrait
Fraser/Kowalski. When Ray Vecchio went undercover, he was replaced at the precinct by another cop named Ray, but with none of the cloak-and-dagger, pretending-to-be-Vecchio stuff in the show. Ray Kowalski is a widower with two children, and as sexual tension mounts between Fraser and his new partner, he finds himself absorbed into the family.
The Sentinel
Choices
Jim/Blair. When Jim's newly re-awakened senses get to be too much, he calls a suicide prevention hotline and speaks with volunteer (and Anthropology doctorate student) Blair. Things go from there. This one is angsty. Whoa boy is it angsty. But, it's really just a tiny spin on the actual events of the show, which are enough to give anyone issues. I keep rereading it anyway.
That's all for now, I think. I hope someone gets some good reading out of these recs and hey -- I'm always open to getting something recommended to me!

Date: 2008-02-10 05:14 am (UTC)No, that's not true, it has Ronon and Melena. (She's not dead! :D) There's some ambiguous something with Rodney and John and Teyla, but I don't remember any sex or anything.
Also, there's a lot of animals eventually. I think.
I'm sorry, but there's not much in the way of buddy AUs. The closest thing I have is non-explicit Rodney/Radek that involves a nightclub.
Maybe sometime soon I'll do a few buddy recs. I read an awesome Ronon pov drabble the other day. :D
