John Sheppard's background

Okay, so, the upcoming episode "Outcast" will be revealing some of John Sheppard's background. Here's a few tidbits from the 'gate wiki and a con Q&A with Joe Flanigan that I thought were interesting.
In this episode, John will be going back to Earth for his father's funeral.
First of all: WHOA, his dad was still alive? And he has a brother. I'm hoping the explanation for why he said he didn't have a family in "Letters to Pegasus" will be very interesting.
Second of all: Joe mentioned at an Auckland convention that one of the things the writers revealed about Sheppard's background that wasn't how he had previously been constructing John's background in his own mind was him coming from a wealthy background. Really, I can see why Joe wouldn't have thought that. I certainly didn't, and most non-AU fic I have seen that speculates and/or invents background for John doesn't run along those lines. I think I need a bit to really absorb this one, and also, once again, it will be interesting to see. Alas, so much for my farm-boy theory. ;)
Thirdly: He takes Ronon with him? Seriously? Well, that'll make an interesting statement. (I can practically hear the Shep/Dex 'shippers cheering from here. ;3)
Fourthly: A-HA! We'll be seeing some repercussions from events in "Miller's Crossing" in this.
Fifthly: We'll finally be seeing Bates again. I never quite warmed to him, but I always felt that he was a guy trying hard to do a hard job, and I sympathized with that. It was never really clear, to me, what happened to him and where he went. Turns out he was shipped back to Earth and honourably discharged from the Air Force after having been wounded by a Wraith? I'm hoping he's not, like, terribly bitter or anything. I think it would be realistic and the actor could certainly do it well, but I'm hoping they take it in a different direction. It would be nice to see Bates relaxed for once, you know? Seems unlikely, though.
Do you like the icon? :D It's a Christmasy sort of Atlantis-in-a-snowglobe.Embarrassingly, I just got it, but I somehow didn't snag the maker's name, and the way I found their journal was a little... convoluted. (Clicking f-list to f-list can be fun!) So if you know who made this, please tell me; I really think it's great, and I would love to credit them. It's by
beeej! :D
