Dear writers of fanfiction,
Mar. 9th, 2012 10:58 pmIf you consistently misspell the name of the main character, not only won't I read your stuff, but I will judge you.
Mockingly not at all yours,
moi.
eta: Rest assured, if a writer I am actually friends with were to do such a thing, I would IM them or leave a comment instead of posting about it here.

Date: 2012-03-10 03:01 am (UTC)Is it at least a character with a strange or questionably-spelled name, such as a Japanese character with an unexpected official spelling? Not that it's any better that way, but it's at least a reason.

Date: 2012-03-10 05:42 pm (UTC)...it disturbs me that "nearly 20 years ago" is actually when the show was airing. I still think of it as the recent pastMyself as well, although I'm not sure where my brain corrected itself. But I would think that if someone was writing fic they also would have consumed enough to know correct spellings.
Then again, maybe that's not the mistake she was referring to at all...

Date: 2012-03-10 05:46 pm (UTC)I had to really think about it and then check Wiki because that would somehow mean that holy crap, I'm old enough for stuff to have been 'nearly 20 years ago'...I certainly thought 'McCloud' was cooler. *icon*
This is true. ^^;;

Date: 2012-03-10 05:56 pm (UTC)Yup.Once read a fic where Duncan met Fox McCloud after a case of mistaken identity meant Falco accidentally kidnapped him. ^^;

Date: 2012-03-11 02:54 am (UTC)The fic was actually decently written, for having the ridiculous premise. It was on someone geocities' website, though, and no longer appears to be on the internet.

Date: 2012-03-11 12:28 am (UTC)No, they seem to disbelieve in capitalization after the first letter. Macleod Macleod
MarshaMacleod. X| I see this a lot in NCIS fandom, except somehow they all get McGee right while flubbing DiNozzo. He even spells it on-air a few times! "Big dee, little eye, big en, little ozzo."(no subject)
Date: 2012-03-11 12:46 am (UTC)Ah. Usually things like that I do f&r in Word after writing just to make sure.
People who say Macleod, Mcleod, MacLeod and McLeod are "the same name" make me twitch though.(no subject)

Date: 2012-03-11 12:29 am (UTC)Trust me, if it was someone I actually talk to, I would just make a comment pointing out the error.

Date: 2012-03-11 03:56 am (UTC)Also...I used to watch Centurions with a passion. As some of you know, one of the main 3 was Ace McCloud. In grade school, I went to shop class for the first time, and while waiting outside the door, I couldn't help notice the nametag on it..."A. McCloud". A fellow fan friend of mine and I then simutaneously turned our heads at each other in jaw-dropping disbelief. Oh, the fun times of youngterism, how I miss thee.
