Title: Hot in the Shade
Fandom: Maniac Love
Characters: Holly Kranz, Alice Nicholas
Summary: The weather keeps acting like a yoyo.
"Ugh!" Holly said as soon as they stepped outside. "Are you sure you don't want to stay inside, where there's air conditioning?" She plucked at the fabric of her t-shirt, already starting to stick to her skin.
Alice, cool as a cucumber in a short sundress and sandals, smiled and shook her head.
"With the amount of people who will be staying inside for that reason, I doubt the AC would help much, even if we could find a spot. Besides --" Alice spread her bare arms wide. "-- I'm enjoying a last chance to get in some quality photosynthesis."
Holly muttered balefully about how unnatural it was to have such a warm day in late October, which lead to Alice reminiscing about childhood Hallowe'en costumes that incorporated snowsuits. Holly, in turn, began talking up the Hallowe'en bash at her favourite club again, trying to convince Alice to go. Meanwhile, they walked right past the utterly packed tree-studded bit of greenspace in the center of campus.
"Where are we headed?" Holly asked belatedly.
"To get you some shade and me some sun, where we can practice our lines." Alice led the way to the shrub and shade tree dotted lawn on the far side of the admin building.
"Huh." Holly looked around; there was no one in sight. "I forgot this was here. I haven't been here since I was a frosh, doing sign-ins."
"Most people seem to," Alice commented, plunking her bag at the edge of a maple tree's shade and glancing at her watch. "Get comfy, we've got about forty minutes."
Holly sat, sighing in instant relief once her head was out of the sun. There were downsides to dying one's hair a dark colour. Checking her cell phone while she dug out her copy of the script made her frown.
"Is your watch fast? I've got fifty -- omigod!"
Alice had pulled off her dress, revealing a bikini. "I'm factoring in hitting the washroom before class." She spread out the sundress like a beach towel and laid belly down before appearing to notice Holly's mouth hanging open. "What?"
Eyes stuck on all the tanned flesh warming in the sun before her, Holly managed to say, "You fucking rock."
Alice hid a blush by snapping her script in front of her face. "Don't get used to it. I stop shaving as soon as November hits, no matter the weather."
Holly chuckled, swigged her water, and said, "Okay, where are we starting?"
However, a few minutes later, when Holly had lost her place for the fifth time, Alice sighed with exasperation.
"Holly. Your lines aren't written on my skin."
"Sorry. Hey! I just had a great idea for how to memorise this!"
They both cracked up with laughter. Not much progress was made on the play that day.
