Title: The Crud
Fandom: Maniac Love
Characters: Holly Kranz, Alice Nicholas
Summary: To everyone who's been feeling under the weather.

Holly stared blearily at the shelves of syrups, trying to figure out which one she needed. She wasn't sure how much of the way the words on the labels kept swimming around was because she was sick, or just because she wasn't used to wearing her glasses anymore. As uncoordinated as she felt this morning, putting in her contacts when she fully intended to dose herself and crawl right back in bed just seemed like far too much effort.

Unfortunately, her glasses seemed to be somehow pressing directly back into her swollen sinuses.

"Ugh," she said.

"Nice to see you, too," said a familiar voice beside her. Alice's voice, a touch amused and at least 20mL concerned.

I'm not thinking straight, Holly thought. Terrible pun. Clearly. I'm not thinking clearly. Clearly, I'm not. She turned towards Alice and hugged her, planting her face right in a soft, fuzzy scarf.

"Hi," she groaned, muffled. "I've got the crud."

"Mm." Alice tipped Holly's head back and kissed her -- forehead only, damn it. "You don't seem to have a fever..."

"No, I'm just woggy because my sinuses are pressing on my brain. 'Scuse me." Holly turned away to noisily blow her nose.

"Much sneezing?" Alice inquired.

"A little."

"Coughing?"

"Not yet, but probably soon."

"Hm. I think you need this one.," Alice said, deftly plucking one of the medications from the shelf. Holly squinted at it, while Alice added, "If you don't have any Aspirin at home, you should pick up one of the little lipstick-sized things, in case you do develop a fever."

"I have no idea. I usually take Tylenol," Holly confessed. Alice handed her another package, a tube of pills attached to a cardboard rectangle by a clear plastic bubble. Holly shook it like a maraca. "Thanks."

"You wanna keep me company while my prescription's being filled?"

"Sure."

They wandered the store. By the time the pharmacist had Alice's order ready, Holly's purchases included boxes of tissues with aloe, microwavable chicken soup, orange juice, cranberry ginger ale, and medicated chapstick.

Alice walked Holly home.

"I'd invite you up," Holly said, in front of her building, "but I'm going to fall on my face."

"it's fine, Hol, I've got an assignment to work on. You go upstairs, take your medicine, drink some soup, and rest." Alice doled out another forehead kiss, then briskly jaywalked to the bus stop as her public transportation chariot appeared at the corner.

The next morning, Holly was feeling better -- chapped and sore-throated, sure, but less like her brain was going to rupture with the next sneeze. She had just settled on the couch with a mug of tea and a bowl of a cereal when her phone rang. She muted the TV when she saw the caller ID display.

"Morning, Alice!"

"Ugh."

"Uh-oh."

"You gave me your crud."

"Sorry. Want me to bring you the cough stuff I have left?"

"Yeah," Alice groaned, sounding like she had just flopped onto a pillow.

"How 'bout I bundle you up and bring you to my place? Away from your crazy roommates?"

"Okay," Alice sighed, then sneezed.

"I'll be there soon."
