Sometime back, I was doing the link-jump dance through the internet and I went from a comparison of John Sheppard and James T. Kirk (enlightening; poor John) to a well-argued breakdown of Kirk's every "romance", with each one analyzed for circumstances, intent, and result.

I have been trying to refind that page again ever since. I can still see it in my mind's eye, the look of it, the colours and the spacing. I could kick myself for not saving a link to the damned thing, but I was still in denial about my sudden resurgence of Star Trek interest. In fact, I recall bemoaning to Taichara over the phone that I was, of all things, researching the original series.

Kick kick kick.

So periodically I try to make Google do tricks and I look for it. I haven't yet rediscovered its location, but yesterday I found something similar. I might say "it's not as good", but what I'd really mean is "it's not what I want".

However, it does have pie-charts. And my friends, I am a sucker for pie-charts.

Gentlebeings, I introduce to you: Kirk's Ladies by Arsenicsands.

I'm still rooting through the rest of the site, and checking out her links and what not. Her fic tends towards the bleak, although I must admit I like her T'Pring better than the one Diane Duane gave us is Spock's World. Somewhere in there you can find an attempt to order the episodes of TOS by stardate, which produces some surprising and occasionally hilarious results. Somewhere in there is a comparison of the relationship between Decker and Ilia with that of Kirk and Spock in the Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

I'll have to try and exert my will over Google again later; for now I am content to be distracted.

Not interested in Kirk, per se, but I missed the JS-JK comparison. Do you have a link? *bats eyelashes hopefully*

Nope. If I did, I'd have them both. And Googling Sheppard and Kirk together tends to produce lots and lots of completely unrelated medical records.

The basic conclusion was that there isn't actually that much in common, here. The majority of Kirk's advances were made to manipulate the woman in question in some way -- as a distraction, to try to win her over, to get her to help, whatever. Whereas Sheppard is never in control when it comes to women. He "never sees it coming"; he's usually pretty hapless. In other words, McKay's pretty off-base when he calls him "Kirk" -- but then, I doubt he's got all the details.

*g* I see a two-fold reason for McKay's derogatory 'Kirk!' epithet --

a] Whether or not John is seeking the female attention, he does seem to garner a large share.

b] Simple (unacknowledged) jealousy that one person is getting more than his "fair share" of attention. And, from the outside, that easy charm that John employs to try to smooth out any sticky situation looks a lot like 'flirting'.

So, although not accurate, I can see why Rodney came up with the comparison.

The basic conclusion was that there isn't actually that much in common, here.

Agreed, especially since, in later years, I developed quite a distaste for Kirk -- in large part because of the way he interacted with women. But I also now see him as arrogant, deciding far too often that his way is the only "right" way.

Yeha, McKay's jealous. There's indications when he talks about his father (and McKay never talks about his mother in SGA) that he and Jeannie were raised to believe that competing was automatic, winning was essential, and getting the most attention was neccessary. It's messed up. :/

See, as I get older I like Kirk more. I can't explain why, exactly -- I know it's partially because I'm not longer a child and thus can just understand more of what's going on. But he is those things you say -- especially in the movies. Those traits were emphasized then.
