eliyes: (The Road Not Taken)

This post contains two related ficlets. Both are set in the canon Stargate AU from the episode "The Road Not Taken", but take place before that episode, and, in fact, before that reality's Sam and Rodney were divorced. They are inspired by two incidents in the show. The first is how happy pre-divorce Sam looks in the picture shown to Lorne, and the second is this exchange from the tail end of the episode:
CARTER Wow. I guess they must've realized I'm more trouble than I'm worth.
MCKAY Hmph. I remember I said the same thing the day we got divorced.

P.O.V.: Sam

Sam woke gradually, coaxed to awareness by fingers lazily stroking across her belly and warm lips nuzzling her neck. She shifted back against the familiar bulk of her husband with a contented sound, reaching to move the caressing hand down.

She wasn't allowed to tell him, anymore, about that was happening at work, but obviously she was giving it away when she was anticipating an exciting or difficult day, because Rodney had taken to waking her this way on those mornings. Not that she was complaining; it was a wonderful way to start the day, even if she did have to deal with turning off her alarm in the middle of their love-making.

They held each other, afterwards, neither willing to break away first -- but Sam had to get ready for work, and once again the phone buzzed. Daniel, wanting to know which uniforms they were wearing today. Rodney rolled away to grab his glasses while Sam negotiated for blue, and kissed her as soon as the call was over.

"Go shower," he said, sounding weary.

"You gonna get some more sleep?" she asked, concerned. He waved the question away; when he was up, he was up, she knew.

She showered quickly, regretfully washing away the smell of him, of them, but it was unprofessional to go to work smelling like sex. Not to mention distracting.

Rodney wasn't in the bedroom when she finished, so she got dressed and headed to the kitchen to find him.

"Mmm," she hummed appreciatively, wrapping her arms around him from behind while he buttered toast. "Honey, I think there's a CEO making me breakfast again."

"Well, if you're not hungry..."

"I just love it when you're all domestic," Sam teased. He turned in her arms and she kissed him before accepting toast, fruit salad, and yogurt. "Is there coffee?"

He snorted. "Of course there's coffee." He poured them each a mug while she started in on her food, and she beamed at him.

"Thanks." It wasn't a complicated meal to make, but it was just what she wanted. Little things like this made her feel loved, and either he'd been doing them more or she'd been noticing more. Either way, it made her feel like she was still a newlywed.

He kissed her again at the door, murmuring, "Be careful today," and, "I love you."

"I will," she promised. "I love you, too."

Then she drove away in the pre-dawn twilight to see what the universe would throw at her today.

Title: What If I Return Half-Broken?
Rating: G
P.O.V.: Rodney

Rodney decided to fire his new secretary the moment he caught her telling the phone, "--sorry, Dr. Jackson, but Mr. McKay is in an important meeting at the --"

"YOU!" he thundered, making her jump. "Transfer that call to my office and then take your lunch break."

"But I already --"

He wordlessly narrowed his eyes at her and she snapped her mouth shut, fingers flying to the buttons that would redirect the line. Rodney slammed his door shut on the sight of her collecting her purse and coat, and fired off a text message to his chief of security to make sure she left the building while he walked over to his desk.

"I'm guessing she's gone," Daniel Jackson observed as soon as he picked up the phone.

"As soon as I can get the paperwork done," Rodney agreed, massaging his right temple with two fingers. "Daniel, it has been twelve days. Where is my wife?" he asked, trying hard to keep his voice calm, but not actually succeeding.

"She's in the base infirmary," was the reply, and he let out a breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding. That was much better than 'I can't tell you', and vastly superiour to the 'we're not sure' he'd gotten that one time when Daniel was too tired to be careful.

It still wasn't good.

"Is she conscious?" Rodney probed. He much preferred getting this news from Daniel than from one of Sam's fellow soldiers, because the man was terrible at lying, and felt Rodney deserved to know more than was always officially allowed.

"She was before they sedated her."

"Does she need surgery?"

"I don't think so, but it will depend on the x-rays."

"So, broken bones. Anything else?"

"Not as far as I know, but I think we'll all be under medical supervision for a few days. I'll get her to call you when she's awake, Rodney."

"No matter the hour," Rodney ordered.

"Of course."

"Right. Just -- thanks."

After the call, Rodney leaned back in his chair with his eyes closed. His relief that Sam was alive was marred by the acid aftereffects of almost two weeks of worry.

He didn't know how much more of this he could take.
