Okay, so, this was a bit of an experiment, which was inspired by a song about a dream. It all takes place in the Pegasus Galaxy, but how much of it takes place on Atlantis I leave it to you to determine.

Title: Like the Foam Upon the Tide
Rating: E for Everyone ;3
Characters: Teyla, John, others
Timing: Nothing past "Missing", I promise.

This is Lahi, who sits on the blanket his mother wove, and frets over her absence. Next to him sits an enormous stranger, whose unfamiliar eyes look down at him from above a scratchy red beard. Lahi does not cry, only clutches his soft, furry doll to his small chest, and gazes upwards. Fear and wonder dance in the sky, borne by buzzing, darting arrowheads and other things. They soar like birds and shout thunder at each other, and sometimes they bloom with fire, and fall. When that happens, they never harm Lahi, and he has stopped flinching. There is a magic window stretching over them in the sky, and what falls on it is swept away by ripples and waves of light, like leaves on the great water. Around him, big men and women talk, but Lahi does not understand "Alterans" or "keh kiy" or "Wraith". He watches the events above with no real grasp of what a battle might be, for his life has been peaceful. He only wonders if, when it ends, his mother will be long in getting back. He does not know how she could have hidden so fast when that beam of light chased her, but he will sit on her blanket until she finds him again.

This is Teyla, who dreams she is Lahi. She wakes confused that she could have forgotten, even for the length of a dream, what a Wraith dart is, and the terror of that fact. She has always known, from her earliest memories, even from before she could speak. Later, she will discuss the dream with Charin, but for now she sets the dream aside and goes about her morning duties. It is still dark when they break camp, but the trek back to the Ring of the Ancestors is a long one, and they must return before trading season begins. It has been a fruitful warm season, and they bring many new goods with them. Teyla is the leader of her people, and so she travels with the advance group. The most diplomatic traders, guards, and crafters will be at their cold season lands before the rest of the Athosians, so that if any of their trading partners come early they will be received. Their friends the Genii have a slightly longer year, and sometimes their harvest comes earlier than the Athosians return. She will not be upset to see a Genii envoy token waiting by the Ring, for she intends to trade this year her choicest furs for a new dress. Kanaan finds her when she is ready to leave, and they start trading the familiar jokes about the coming duties of setting up the fish weirs along the river. She has a surprise for him, a gift of a new coat for the coming chill, and this secret paints her day with joy. It is a good season.

This is John, who dreams he is Teyla. He wakes confused, for while she has shown up in his dreams before, he has never dreamt he was her until now. It is not a bad dream, merely strange, and so the tricks he has had to learn in a long career of soldiering that keep his night terrors out of his day don't quite work. Still, he goes for his morning run with Ronon, he showers, he eats breakfast with his team -- all the usual things. Teyla seems no different this morning, and he doesn't mention the dream. He knows she puts a lot of stock in dreams, and he knows she'd been friends with Heightmeyer. Since he really doesn't want to know what dreaming he was a female friend of his could mean, he determinedly pushes it from his mind. He can't help but swing by the Gateroom to see her off when she takes Dr. Keller to New Athos, though. He wonders if Teyla thinks of New Athos as home. She visits her people there, obviously, but he's painfully aware of what multiple relocations can do to people. It was his fault the Athosians had to move to Lantea, living like refugees in Atlantis before they settled on the mainland. He blamed himself for their eviction to New Athos, as well; he shouldn't have been caught unprepared for the Ancients to take over the city. Now Atlantis floats in the ocean of a new world, and while that's disconcerting for many of them, he wonders if it's worse for Teyla, or if she's used to it.

This is Bremar, who dreams he is John. He pulls his gaze away from the meditation fountain with a frown. He knows that he must practice on focusing his visions, must master his skills and expand them in order to move closer to Ascension, but lately they are puzzling and obscure, couching one within another like the layers of a pauki fruit. The boy -- he knew that battle, it had happened at Atteria, many days ago. He had been in a cruiser, targeting weapons on Wraith ships, and monitoring the shield they had erected over the human survivors. So many lives lost... but he had not seen the boy. Did he view the past from different perspectives, now? That was exciting, but it did not fit the others. Who was the woman and why did she call the Stargate "the Ring of the Ancestors"? Who were the Genii, or, for that matter, the Athosians? He recalled no cultures using those names, guided or unguided. And what of the man? A fighter, like Bremar, but unlike him. He seemed almost Alteran, but his experience was as misguidedly passionate as a human, flickering with brutal memories and many worries. Bremar sought the purity of Ascension, but his exercises brought him visions of such strong emotion, such vivid mortality! Was he being tested? Was this a sign that he had much to overcome before he was ready? He was not sure -- and he pushes it out of his mind as alarms came on throughout Atlantis. The Enemy was approaching the city! Bremar left the fountain and went to take up arms to defend his home.
