The first actual episode of NCIS is basically about how Gibbs hired Kate. As the series goes on, we see him hire McGee and Ziva. We know that Abby is like a daughter to him, that Ducky is like a brother. Gibbs makes his team.
But we don't know how Tony got there.
In an early episode, Kate actually asks him directly, "How did you get into NCIS?" and Tony answers, "I smiled."
In another early episode, there's this exchange:
Tony: I didn't become an NCIS agent yesterday Kate. As a matter of fact tomorrow...
Gibbs: ...is going to be two years.
Tony: That's kind of touching Gibbs. Remembering the day you hired me.
Gibbs: Yeah, well it seemed like a good idea at the time.
So, Gibbs obviously picked Tony up like he does his other agents. Tony was working with the Baltimore PD at the time. This is the extent of our canonical knowledge.
Naturally, I went looking for fic. Most of what I found was crap. Like, really crap. Not even just the stuff that threw them into bed.
Then I found Rictus, and now I never need to look for a story about this particular thing again. It's long, it's a case story, it has emphasis on the emotions and building of connections tied up in this first meeting, and I love it. But the first two paragraphs slap you in the face with how ugly this case will be, and if you can't deal with them, you won't survive this fic. If you can deal, it's totally worth every word.
