Saints of Days Gone By

Silver Saint Harfang, Saint of Perseus

Harfang came to Sanctuary from France in the 1700s. The son of a Breton sailor, he’d been apprenticed to his father, who covertly honoured Athene in her role as goddess of navigators. After the death of his father, Harfang sailed by himself to Sanctuary. A willful lad of the age of fourteen, he insisted he was old enough to decide his own fate, and refused to give his original name for fear of being sent back, instead calling himself ‘Harfang’, a French word for a type of owl. Sanctuary accepted him into training, and he was soon the new Perseus Saint.

Over the course of his life, Harfang remained a devout servant of Athene and Sanctuary. He involved himself in the country’s boat building, sailing, and fishing activities, becoming an expert at navigating the sometimes-treacherous coast. Harfang also taught: reading and writing where necessary, and arithmetic, but also map-reading, history, and politics. He adopted one of his students, a bright young boy from Holland, named Tanneken, who eventually because the Saint of the Sea-Compass. Harfang ended up with the entire flock of the Argo Navis Saints. He established a training ground in the New World and found students there.

Towards the end of his life, Harfang was concerned with preparing Sanctuary for a disturbance he sensed coming – the Napoleonic Wars. He died before things started, but his son and students continued his work.

Perseus Harfang was known for his keen eyesight and clarity of vision, which may have been enhanced by his cosmo. He was a smooth talker, often very persuasive. His cosmo abilities primarily involved wind effects, the most militant of which was his Slashing Gale, which cut an opponent from all sides.

Harfang had brown hair and blue eyes, and was rather unremarkable in appearance.

Silver Saint Randolph, Saint of Canis Major

Randolph came to Sanctuary as a very young boy in the last decade of the 19th century, traumatized by the murder of his parents right in front of him. With him came a hound that refused to leave his side until the day the animal died. His relationship with the loyal dog certainly influenced which Cloth he felt an affinity to.

Randolph grew to be a tall, brawny man, with straw-coloured hair and grey-green eyes. He was as gentle as he was strong, and very adept at dealing with very young children. He was also very good at finding children in need, and so he mainly served Sanctuary in the capacity of ‘recruitment’.

Peaceful and non-violent by nature, Randolph honed his cosmo towards techniques that soothed, restricted, or protected himself and others. Unfortunately, he didn’t develop a defense against bullets, and for this reason his career as a Saint was tragically short. Canis Major Saint Randolph was shot while trying to retrieve children from an area of heavy fighting in the mountainous Austria/Italia border in 1917, less than twenty years after he earned his Cloth.

The Saints who went to retrieve his body found it, and the children he died protecting, being guarded by a tearful young soldier – the very one who’d killed him – who was acting out Randolph’s final wishes.

Silver Saint Grigori, Saint of Cetus

Cetus Grigori had held his position in Sanctuary for fifty years when the Holy War broke out. A contemporary of Lacerta Alexander and Aries Jie Xuie, he – like them and other Saints of their time – knew the war was coming. Shortly before the infant who would be Athene was born, Grigori became the proud father of a daughter he named Katarina.

At an early age, Katarina showed great potential, and Grigori began training her in the use of her cosmo. Her abilities were very like his own, but she also innovated some original techniques, and he was very proud of her. By the age of fifteen, Katarina still had not been chosen by a Cloth. Grigori was blind to the implication, the danger of this… Until Katarina disappeared.

Grigori searched for her. For two weeks, he combed the ocean, checking all her favourite haunts and every place he’d ever taken her. When he finally found her, she was patrolling the waters with three other young women, and she was wearing a Scale. She had become one of Poseidon’s Oceanids.

The Cetus Saint returned to Sanctuary a desperate man. He begged the Holy Father and the girl Athene to be allowed to act as ambassador to the Marina, in hopes that the two holy orders could become allies. Finally, permission was granted. The first visit went well. The second visit was Cetus Grigori’s last. On the way back to sanctuary – accompanied by an honour guard of five Oceanids, including Katarina… something happened. The bodies were found looking much as though they had killed each other with their cosmo attacks. Each side blamed the other, and the incident assured enmity between the two orders.

To this day, no mortal knows the truth of what happened, but hindsight suggests the involvement of Spectres, ordered by Hades to prevent his rivals from allying against him.

Girgori’s hair went silver at an early age, and his eyes were so dark a blue as to seem black. He was a tall, sinewy man, whose movements well-matched the monstrous serpent he perceived Cetus to be. His attacked focused on slams and bite-like effects, as well as aquatic breathing and speed.

A scholar as well as a warrior, Grigori’s journals can be found in Sanctuary’s archives, filled with observations of sea life and conditions in his lifetime.

Fun stuff -- nicely balancing out the insanity that is Blood and Fire *pleasedhamster*

Also, I am instructed to inform you that Saga approves of Randolph and had a wierd woobie moment (that way he does). He is now snugged down somewhere dark and quiet; take that any way you wish ...

See? I told you that i got the feeling he was one of those people Saga was mourning. Even if Saga didn't adopt him, Randolph would have been likely to trust the gentle Gemini Saint, and with a personality like his, his loss would have been wouding for Saga. Not to mention Shion and Kanon, I'm sure.
