Star Trek canon also (stupidly) manages to completely revamp what Klingons look like and then try to sidestep the reason why. Not to mention that arsed explanation of the various species by saying they all have a common origin (no matter how idiotic that would be, see: differing blood chemistry etc etc) ...
Never mind the "might be", this is a topic where individual writers will just have to make their own choices because "canon" shot itself in the head.
