Title: Combat Medic
series: Andorians
summary: Doctor Shallan's first posting was a starbase. Here's a story from that timeframe.

Commander Jowar Dasgupta set his tray down next to a young Andorian shen in a Starfleet medical blue uniform.

"Shallan, Shallan, Shallan," he said, shaking his head as he sat. "What am I going to do with you?"

Her antennae twitched. "It looks like you're going to eat breakfast with me, Commander."

"Well, yes," he said, picking up his boiled egg and knocking it on the side of his plate. "But I mean more generally. Do you know, about half my security guards think you're the greatest thing since the rapid nadion pulse, and the other half want to lock you up for your own protection."

Shallan bobbed her head in amusement, stirring the contents of her bowl. "I know I've patched up a lot of security guards recently, sir, but I'm pretty sure I haven't met all of them."

"Word travels fast." He took a bite of toast and winked at her.

"Gossip?" she gasped. "Among Starfleet officers?! Alert the media!"

Jowar laughed.

"I know. How shocking! But --" He wagged his fork at her. "-- the thing is, you keep running into danger and coming out the other side covered in glory. If you weren't a Doctor, Shallan -- if you'd gone into Security and wound up under my command -- I wouldn't know whether to bust your ass or give you a commendation."

"I was removing wounded from a danger zone."

"Which you aren't supposed to do until it's been secured."

"I was told it was. It's not my fault I had to fight my way out when the invaders cut us off, Commander." Her tone was defensive, which probably meant she'd already been given a dressing-down by one or more other senior officers on this topic. Smart money was on Doctor N'Darie, the Starbase's CMO. In the year or so since the Andorian had been posted here, their epic shouting matches had become a regular part of the local colour. They never confined them to Sickbay, either; you were actually more likely to run across them in the middle of a vicious disagreement in a turbolift or messhall -- even tracking each other down in Recreation areas to angrily wave datapads at each other, hissing in outrage.

It was obvious to anyone who knew them that they loved each other like family, which just made it funnier, in Jowar's opinion.

"No, it's not." He smiled at her. "But I've got a new influx of greenhorns, Shallan -- fresh from the Academy, bright and shiny -- and I have to figure out what to tell them about you. And also, I can't have them thinking every Doctor can tell them where on any given species a stun-shot or good hard kick will do the most good."

Shallan knocked back the last of her juice and then took a crunching bite from the cup.

"Tell them I'll give them anatomy lessons if they'll spar with me," she suggested hopefully.

He couldn't help it; Jowar started laughing again.
