Adapted from some babbling I did in a chat last night:

I keep wanting to write fanfic about OCs in Star Trek novels I'm reading. *facepalm* ...Which are technically themselves fanfic.

I wanna write about Jerry Richardson (nicname: Romeo) from Killing Time, who got away with calling Kirk "Juliet" and died to save a universe not his own

I wanna write about Kristiann Norris from Enemy Unseen, diplomatic aide and expert with translation technologies, who bonded with a certain starship captain over cheating on their diets

I wanna write about Commodore Katha'sat from The Wounded Sky, who has more knees and elbows than a human and is a killer poker player

And mostly today, I wanna write about Kirk, John C. Lieutenant. United States Army Air Corps, serial number 0-159466, from Home Is The Hunter, and his POW flyboy bond with Chekov.

But I'm of two minds about it. On the one hand, it's bad form to borrow someone's OCs without asking. On the other hand, though these books are really just published fanfic, they are books and thus should theoretically be fannish fair game.

My head hurts. :(

...Is there a statute of fannish limitations? at least one of these books was printed the year I was born...

I don't see why you shouldn't. People use book-canon all the time.

Pfft. That's like not wanting to use NPCs in a D&D sourcebook because the writer used them in their own games first.

Write the damn things.

I say if it's a book, it's fair game.

IMO books are a source of canon, even when they disagree with TV-canon. (AU m i rite?)

Go for it. I fifth the advice given above. If it's in a novel published with a shiny "Star Trek" cover, it's canon. Write it. Write it nooooooowwwwww. ;P

Huh. I hadn't looked at it that way. It is pretty much the same thing, isn't it?

Mrrr, I'd say more source of alternate continuity when they disagree with TV canon, but yes, AU U R rite. (In some cases literally! *glomps Ensign Kirk and Captain Spock*)

I've started noticing that about ST2009 fic as relates to McCoy; a lot of people give Bones the ex-wife and the daughter somewhat as-seen in the books. On the one hand, it's nice to see the new stuff get pollinated with ideas from the old by fans. On the other, I could wish for some more variety. Change things up a bit. I mean, some things are just different in the movie. Chekov is older than his TOS counterpart, frex...

(OT, but thanks for the fic-rec for "Home". It was awesomeness in a 'ship I didn't know I liked.)

(You're welcome! You've pretty much summed up my reaction to it, too.)

Interesting! So obviously there are scads of people who don't comment on my journal who also feel it is A-OK to fic off novels. Good to know. *validated~*
