These three novels all take place after Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
The Prometheus Design by Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath.
-5 out of 5 stars. I give this an anti-recommendation. Disregarding the OCs, the only person not massively out of character in this is McCoy. And he is not one of the main characters. There are footnotes all through this whenever they mention something that happened in an episode, which is the only proof I have that the authors are familiar with the Trek verse at all.
Black Fire by Sonni Cooper.
1 star out of 5. Not terrible or anything, but boring. I think it's just too much stuff crammed into 220 pages. The only thing that gets really detailed is the very beginning, the rest is like someone is outlining a story to you without giving enough specifics. Primarily notable for Spock-as-pirate.
Enemy Unseen by V.E. Mitchell.
4 out of 5 stars! I like this one so much I reread it. It's a murder mystery -- there's no time-traveling, no Klingons, no Romulans (difficult to find in TOS-cast novels, I've noticed). There are a couple of enormous plot holes -- eg. when someone tells Kirk something in chapter two and then in chapter three it comes up again and he doesn't clue in, or when they're all like "we have never seen the like before" while I am meanwhile sitting here naming the TOS episode it happened in.... But my fave thing about this book is Kirk's interactions with women. :3 There's one woman he is running away from! She wants in his pants and he wants to kick her off the ship or possibly shove her out an airlock, but the admiralty have specifically forbidden it. There's three women he gets married to -- I'd like to say by accident, but it's not, reall; he just has no idea what the ceremony is for until it's done. He spends a lot of time trying to give them back to the alien ambassador they came from. And then there's the diplomat he makes friends with.
Kirk. Makes friends with a woman. No sex or romance involved! In fact, they kinda bond over being on diets, longing for ice cream, and such. It's adorable and I intend to steal her into a fanfic at some point. ;3
