Some Stargate-ly genfic recs (for Kiffie and others)

Comfort Food (SG-1, Teal'c being awesome and cooking)

Inundation (SGA, team + Zelenka & others stranded)

Voyage par Mer (This is big and plotty and revolves around the idea that Rodney McKay and Grant Jansky are cousins. Grant is another character David Hewlett played, in the Canadian series Traders. He's brilliant and sweet and broken. You can see some of his first appearence on youtube. Not seen in that: Grant's hugginess. This fic also has John and Carson. There's some Special Ops John happening, very ruthlessly violent, but man I do not blame him. There's also sequelae but they're not as strong, I feel... probably because they're a WIP for one big sequel.)

Next rec: I, Rodney. As you can probably guess from the title, Rodney is a robot in this one. It works really well, starting with the beginning of the SGA series (John and Rodney get off on the wrong foot), leap frogs regularly between "present" and "Rodney's past" but with multiple povs. We get a lot of interesting stuff with Rodney & Jeannie, as well. It was posted in five parts, and they all link at the bottom to the next, but here: One Two Three Four Five

Some fluffy fics from kisahawklin:
Blanket Fort
Musical Chairs (I like this one especially for John's incredulousness over people thinking he and Rodney are/should be a couple. I've been in that friendship.)
Sprawl (Team + Woolsey n'aww)

A Not So Small Life (Brief character study of John.)

Some moments from John & Rodney's friendship in Like Butch and Sundance, Only Without the Bolivian Army part 1 part 2

With that, I think I've reached the stuff I've already rec'd you, so I shall pause.

Two things:

First of all, Abby Scuito bobblehead debuts at Comic Con.

Second, click here for SGA genfic recs (a votre attention, Kiffie!) )

Now I'm taking a nap so that I can (hopefully) get up and go watch the Pride Parade (if I don't sleep through my alarm).

Kiffie! SGA genficathon is on again!

There may be awesome buddy fic recs here in the future, for when you are done finals and want to spend the time it will take your dial-up to load a) LJ, and b) the fics (which are likely to also be on LJ).

Here is the first rec: Icarus, On A Cloudy Day. Team striving together in a non-shooting situation, Teyla's pov. You really get the sense of the world they're on.

jokes rec and cat anecdote

Jokes they tell on Atlantis is an actual list of jokes, feel free to add your own. I like the fortune cookie variations. X3

eta: Oh, man, don't miss out on the jokes in the comments, either. Someone started a Ronon Dex Facts thread. "Ronon Dex puts the laughter in manslaughter."
etaa: There is a Ronon Dex Facts post.

Here in real life, where Cats Are My Anti-TV, there's a beep starling that's been sitting outside my window for hours, making lots of random noises. boycat finds this so exciting he had to make himself take a time out and hide under my bed for 10 minutes to calm down.

A thought

The logistal problem with firearms practice/training in Atlantis prior to re-establishing contact with Earth is that the ammunition they brought with them is all the ammunition they have. What's the right balance between keeping skills sharp and conserving valuable resources?

ABCIADEFG

Watched RED. Enjoyed it; nice light psychotic paranoid action flick. I was expecting Karl Urban to have a smaller role, so that was a nice surprise.

It did get me thinking about the CIA, fannishly.

NCIS + CIA = not a happy combo for Gibbs' team, I'm guessing. I bet Gibbs and Fornell gang up on 'em, when they can.

SGA + CIA = plotbunnies for Rodney, who, after all, worked for the CIA as a teenager/before the USAF. (I kind of suspect Vegas!Rodney still does?) I have a vague idea kernal for something about Rodney recognising that someone is a CIA agent, either from just how they behave, or from actually having done some analyst work for them when he was in. I doubt the field agents always know who did their background work, after all. And then, of course, there's the idea that Rodney was actually inserted into the SGC hierarchy by the CIA, possibly by Trust agents therein, and has been undercover THIS WHOLE TIME. (I think I may have read that?) This is mostly born of my enjoyment of both his ability to get Elizabeth to lie extravagantly, and the hot way he takes charge sometimes (like in Epiphany -- s'only think I like about that episode, really).

And of course, there are actually CIA characters in SotT. Well, there's one. She's a lovely old harridan, too. Not that SotT bears any resemblance to how the intelligence agencies and underworld communities of the real world actually work. ...Although I'd love to see Team Templar square off with Team Gibbs. In the field, I think they might have the advantage, but in if the NCISers have their HQ back-up i.e. Abby, Ducky, and Palmer, the tables turn. I can see Fornell taking bets on this...

Of course, maybe Ducky knows Ethan. Or maybe Team Gibbs (when Tony was in charge, to make it worse?) had to deal with Team Templar and Simon uttered one of his "poncy English bastard" slams -- which would bother Ducky less, depending, since he's Scottish... but remember, Tony's late mother was English. (How worse? If he was team leader, McGee and Ziva are way more like to get their backs up in his defense.) Hell, maybe Tony ran unto Jeremy at his rich uncle's funeral in England or something. Tall, dark-haired, cocky, ex-football player, kind-of-a-juvenile-asshole federal agent... just his type! XD

*sporfle*

I'm pretty sure that the reaction this author was hoping for when she wrote and posted this story with a sex scene full of repeated confessions of love and deep, meaningful relationship talk was not hysterical giggling and eventually having to scroll past to a more serious section because being able to breath would be nice.

It is a very good thing she can't see me reading her stuff, then, since that is exactly what keeps happening. XD

insta-rec! SGA genfic ahoy!

This just popped up on my f-list and I love it. It's fairly short, about 1700 words, so it's a quick little read.

It's actually a lot lower than his usual speaking voice.

I don't know why it is...

I seem to be constitutionally incapable of watching William Shatner sing.

Hm.

Well, never mind. Hey, want fic where Jessica Fletcher is Rodney McKay's Aunt Jess? Of course you do! Here, read these and tell Chandri to keep on with the series:
Knitted Goods (short, cute, pre-slash)
Casting On (much longer, still cute, actual sex scenes)

"What?" Rodney asks, blinking his way back up into non-physics reality with everybody else. Sometimes this takes a minute.

[livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon has posted a fic festival on her LJ -- anyone here interested in the three things listed in my subject line for this post should check it out. (It's not 100% clear if non-McShep commentfic is allowed, but if that's what rings you're bell, you could ask.)

A QUIBBLE *eyetwitch*

Author and fic not named to protect the hideously guilty.

I was reading this SGA fic, set after "The Return (Part 1)" where John is looking for a place to live in Colorado Springs --

-- COLORADO SPRINGS --

-- and John for some reason is having trouble finding a place that's "on a hill". A hill. In Colorado Effing Springs!

DID THEY THINK THAT CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN WAS JUST STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLAINS ON ITS OWN?!

WAS WIKIPEDIA DOWN THAT DAY?!

"The Ancient Database" -- nonsensical SGA fanon spotlight

Okay, so, the city of Atlantis, being riddled with advanced computers built by the same folk as made stargates and whatnot, has a database. The Ancient database, the people living there call it in the show, to distinguish it from the database they have set up for their own computers. They work on translating it (Elizabeth), they sent as much as they could to the SGC when they thought they were going to be destroyed, and sometimes when they find something in the city -- or of Ancient origin but not in the city -- they see if they can find info in the database on it.

Now, finding information in the database on a specific but unidentified object is generally problematic, because they don't know what to search for, for one thing, and also because figuring out the filing method in the database has posed some difficulty. The Alterans didn't exactly use the Dewey Decimal System.

Planets are a little easier; by the end of the second season they've clearly located a list of planets that have stargates on them, and also orbital 'gates. Much easier to know when to use a puddlejumper and avoid wandering into vacuum that way. We've seen in the show that sometimes the database has notes about various planets, for example if there was an outpost there, if there was some experiment being conducted there, etc. And sometimes, there's nothing. Like in "Doppleganger" --

McKAY: Look, do you have any idea how many Gate addresses there are in the Ancient database that have no accompanying description?

SHEPPARD: Forty-two.

McKAY: No, I think it's a little more than that. Look, I don't really remember. That's not the point. Nothing -- no information at all. I say that has to mean something.

SHEPPARD: Maybe it means there's nothing worth writing about on those planets.

Now, it makes sense for them to check the database when they're choosing planets to explore (as opposed to conducting trade from contacts made on other worlds, although they probably also check it then) and you can bet they've scoured it for stuff like "ZPM factory".

But here's the thing: any entry in the database is a minimum of ten THOUSAND years old. They are not going to find information about the cultures currently inhabiting any of the planets, because those cultures were not AROUND back then! And yet in fic after fic after fic, I see this illogical bit of fanon.

It's irritating. Like a rash.
