the year in fic meme 2011
Originally lifted from
poisonivory. (2009, 2010.) This year I've removed a question, and will continue to do so in future, since my answer hasn't changed from 2009.
In the order they were written:
Fics:
Gar and Jennie do coffee and gossip (DC, Changeling & Jade)
The Proper Ingrediants (Star Trek OCs, Andorians-'verse)
Curious Cat-like Being Is Curious (Star Trek OCs, Andorians-'verse)
NCIS fic-snippet from a case fic I probably won't ever write (NCIS)
Blinded (Highlander: The Source, Methos POV)
Merry Messenger (DC, Silver Age, Piper & Trickster)
Toon In (DC, Piper & Trickster)
Life, I Love You (DC, Lian & Roy Harper, & Titans)
Do you know that courage can wash away your tears? (Marvel, Steve Rogers & Arnie Roth)
Three Exhausted Women (Sailor V manga/Sailor Moon anime combined past)
12-Second Delay (Sailor Moon, Mamoru POV)
Gobsmacked (DC, Piper & Jay)
Revealing (DC, Steph & Damian)
National Coming Out Day Drabbles (1: Marvel, X-Factor, Rictor/Shatterstar; 2: Marvel, Captain America - James Barnes; 3: DC, Flash family incl. Piper)
Not Now, But Someday (Marvel, X-Factor v1, Opal/Bobby)
Kith (Marvel, pre-M-Day X-books, Warpath & Juggernaut)
Au Revoir (DC, Man of Valor, Kon & Reep)
Overall Thoughts:
Not a lot of fic made it to the posting phase this year, but some of what did was stuff I really needed to write. I think I did well at emotionally-charged scenes, and my comedic timing is improving a little.
Uh... although, it's the exact same number of fic as last year.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Less -- although exactly the same number as the year before. Huh.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Sailor Moon/Sailor V reached out and grabbed me in August. I hadn't been anticipating writing for it at all.
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
Ah, but this is two seperate questions! My favourite is really hard to choose, but I think it might be "Do you know that courage can wash away your tears?". However, the one that makes me happiest is "Gar and Jennie do coffee and gossip", because it's a lead-in piece to a long Gar-centric story that is the reason I started this journal (in 2005!) and I still haven't gotten done! Just posting that feels like progress!
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I wrote about some less known, and some actually unpopular, characters and/or dynamics. *pretends to be indie for a sec, then cracks up laughing* It was interesting to branch out and explore characters I hadn't, before. Reader response was muted but varied.
Meanwhile, in "Life, I Love You", I wrote a fix-it/happy AU fic featuring tremendously popular characters and I think I'm the only one who ever read it. XD Which is a shame, as I think it's a pretty good story...
From my past year of writing, what was...
My best story of this year:
I really don't know. It's hard to choose! I think most of them have merits of some kind, but they're different and hard to compare.
My most popular story of this year:
"Merry Messenger" got the most feedback, so...
Most fun story to write:
"Merry Messenger". Piper and Trickster in an early interaction, before all the angst happens? C'mon, that was basically pure fun. :)
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Not a one! I wrote a squishy domestic warm fuzzy for my Andorian bondgroup, a fic about a couple who were sexually active, and a drabble with a statement kiss described only as "thorough". I don't think I wrote anything "sexy" this year!
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Well, that depends on how you feel about people being turned into cartoon anthropomorphic animals. Personally, I'm for it, but if you aren't, you might be mildly feebed by "Toon In". And if you're squeamish about reproductive functions, "Not Now, But Someday" might poke you in the ick factor, even though it's really more about the emotional aspects and none of the mess is described.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Alas, none, although some of them are meant to highlight less-explored aspects of certain characters.
Hardest story to write:
Of what actually got posted, and not counting that case fic I truly won't be finishing, probably "Blinded". If you could see it in my notebook, you'd see three different colours of ink and at least one paragraph scribbled out. Getting certain sentences right was a struggle, and how to do the ending at all eluded me for a bit.
The hardest to title was "Au Revoir", hands down. I'm still not happy with it, in fact. I had it done for at least a week and a half before I finally gave up; it was more important to post it, and I can change the title later if something comes to me.
Biggest Disappointment:
"Three Exhausted Women". It's not a bad story, but I had like four or five different versions running around in my head, at the least, and I still sort of regret not being able to do it from Minako's POV.
Biggest Surprise:
"Kith" just kind of politely knocked on my brain and requested to be written. I confess I'm surprised that this wasn't addressed in the published books.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
"Not Now, But Someday", except it's not so much unintentional as just working out some issues in the writing of it.
