Title: Small World
Fandom: Avengers (movie), Thor (movie)
Author's Notes: I like Dr. Erik Selvig, and find it interesting that the movies keep connected him to the Hulk end of things in little ways. This ficlet is specifically inspired by the scene in Thor where he mentions knowing a scientist who was working on gamma radiation who was never seen again after the jack-booted thugs showed up. This takes place after the Avengers movie.

"Banner?"

Bruce stopped at the sound of his name. The voice was familiar, but the hesitant tone was unusual in this facility full of SHIELD personnel. Keeping his body language and face calm, he turned.

"It is you," Dr. Erik Selvig said, appoaching.

"Yes. It's been a long time --" He cut off when Selvig unexpectedly hugged him. It was brief but heartfelt; Bruce barely had time to register the warmth of a cotton-clad shoulder against his face before it was over, Selvig's large hands clasping his shoulders instead.

"My god, I didn't think I'd ever see you again! Have you been with SHIELD all this time?"

"No." Bruce gave a quick, sheepish smile. "No, my ...alliance with SHIELD is a new thing. I did my best to go off the grid..." He cleared his throat. "You were working with the Tesseract? Has anyone tested you for gamma radiation poisoning?"

"No." Selvig looked surprised, then thoughtful. "Fury did mention something about it not being harmless."

"It can cause serious genetic mutation," Bruce told him gravely. "I'm -- something of an expert. Why don't we go to my lab, do a blood test."

"Sure," Selvig agreed, looking concerned... concerned about Bruce, not himself. It was painfully nostalgic.

Bruce sighed, and stepped back slightly, indicating with a gesture. "This way, then. How did you end up working with SHIELD?"

"You remember Jane Foster?" At Bruce's nod, Selvig started in on a tale of wormholes and Asgardians come to Earth.
