The OCD burning desire to answer any question kicked in and I had to go looking for a source.

Nearly 20 minutes and a goodly dose of Librarian-fu later:

The internet and various references have the quote a with several difference year/mile amounts, with 100 being the most common, followed by 50 and 200. One said 500 (although I'm pretty sure 500 years is both a long time and a long way from most perspectives). On the 50 and 200 ones the source was either "Unknown" or not given at all. The 100 version, including in a book called "The Mammoth Book of Quips and Quotations" attribute the source to a gentleman called "Earle Hitchner" who, according to Google, is a columnist for the Irish-American newspaper The Irish Echo. ^_^;

*coughs. Wanders off*
