Residents of the island Lesvos have begun legal proceedings to ban the Gay and Lesbian Community of Greece from using the word "lesbian" in their title.

I support this 100%! For months and months now, I've been (half-assedly) trying to get people to switch to another word. Just think of the confusion encountered by any resident of Lesvos (aka Lesbos) traveling abroad! They are, officially, Lesbians. Some of them may also be gay women! Most of them, however, are not.

I say, for the name of clarity, that homosexual women should be known as "rezbians".

No, actually. It's because in ancient times, the women of Lesbos were renowned for giving the best blow jobs in all of the Mediterranean. The Victorians coined the phrased for homosexual woman half out of irony and half because, well, oral sex is a staple of rezbian sex. Sappho's reputation as a wonderful poet survived from antiquity, but it wasn't until around 1920 that a complete poem was rediscovered. Everything else we have is teeny fragments, and a lot of it has had a spin put on it. Keep in mind that until the Victorians, there was no concept of homosexuality, and Sappho was not only married but wrote about loving at least one man.

I don't understand why we can't just say gay to mean men and women. I mean, a lot of people do already. Let's just make it official.

I've never understood it either, unless it's based on the belief that it's two separate sexual orientations, i.e. attracted to women, attracted to men. If you think about it, in a way it's kinda weird that gay men and gay women are considered one group at all. For myself, I don't think anything's that simple; there are gradations and not everyone who says they're gay is exclusively attracted to just one sex (although of course some are). You can probably blame this on my own orientation and the ideas my mom passed down to me. ;3

hmm. Yes, that makes sense. I don't know, it's a tricky situation, and since I'm not a lesbian, or a Lesbian, I guess I should stay clear lol

I don't recall that being covered in my Greek history classes; I researched it all on my own, for obvious reasons. ^.^

It is a tricky one. As I said, I really think the people of Lesbos have a point, although they've probably missed the boat long since at this point.

Sappho was mentioned. I looked the rest up out of interest. I took the class for honors, and did a presentation on Greek women. I discussed Sappho briefly.

I often wish we had more documents and/or archaeological evidence that told us about women from the time period. Not that I'm the only one; I'm pretty sure there's been that lament in pretty much every Classics and archaeology course I've ever taken, with few exceptions. (Women: we're taking over the social sciences.)

I"m wondering why this hasn't come up before, frankly, but maybe they didn't see it as a problem until it started popping up closer to home.

Oh I know. I remember bringing up in my presentation the fact that even though there is some documentation on women of Ancient Greece, the fact remains that it's all from the male point of view. We don't have anything from women about women.

Yeah, how long as the Gay and Lesbian Community of Greece been established? If it's been a relatively long time, you do have to wonder why they're bringing it up now.
